Former Men's Soccer Player Named Maryland Principal Of The Year
April 9, 2013
BALTIMORE - Former Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer player and current North County High School principal Bill Heiser has been named the 2013 High School Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP).
Heiser, who has been at North County since 2010, will now be considered for the national honor by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
“I am truly humbled by this award,” said Heiser, who has spent 15 years in education. “It is a sincere privilege to serve the students, parents, teachers, and community of North County. This award recognizes all of our hard work and shared commitment to achieving greatness."
Prior to moving to North Country, Heiser worked in Anne Arundel County as an assistant principal at Annapolis High School.
In 2009, the year before Heiser arrived at North County, Knight seniors earned $1.7 million in scholarships. Last year, seniors earned $10.8 million in scholarships. The school’s SAT participation has climbed from 39 percent to 68 percent, and the number of Advanced Placement exams administered has grown from 369 to more than 1,100.
Heiser also spearheaded the introduction of key business, community and education partnerships that further enhance student achievement.
A 1995 graduate of Loyola, Heiser helped the Greyhounds’ men’s soccer team to four-straight MAAC Regular Season and Tournament titles, in addition to an NCAA College Cup appearance and two play-in games. Throughout his four seasons, the Greyhounds posted an overall record of 65-18-4, went 27-1-0 in MAAC play and won all eight MAAC Tournament games they played in.
The Bowie, Md., native concluded his career tied for 14th in the program’s all-time career points records, 13th in career goals and 10th in career assists. Only three players have surpassed his four-year totals of 80 points, 30 goals and 20 assists in the past 17 years.
Heiser will be presented with his Principal of the Year Award at a banquet at Turf Valley on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. Heiser will then be a presenter at Loyola’s Sociology Career Day on April 15 at 8 p.m.
