McVea Signs Pro Soccer Contract In Finland
April 2, 2010
BALTIMORE - Three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Tennant McVea (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Regent House Grammar) has signed a professional soccer contract to play for F.C. Lahti, a leading team in the Finnish Premier Division.
McVea, who graduated from Loyola University Maryland in December 2009, earned the league's top defensive honor for the third-consecutive season last fall. He helped the Greyhounds advance to their third NCAA College Cup in as many years and was a team captain.
"I am very pleased for Tennant as it has always been his strong aspiration to play professional soccer," Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick said. "Tennant has made an excellent contribution to our Loyola program and we wish him the very best in his new venture. We look forward to following him in the Finnish Premier League."
During his standout career at Loyola, McVea was a three-time NSCAA/adidas Regional All-American and earned NSCAA/adidas All-America First Team honors as a junior in 2008.
He was a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award as a senior, earning Lowe's Senior Class All-America Second Team honors in 2009. He was a member of the Hermann Trophy Watch List, an award given annually to the top player in college soccer, during his final season, as well.
A center back for the Greyhounds, McVea helped the Greyhounds form one of the best defenses in the nation. Over the past three seasons, Loyola recorded a 48-13-5 (.765) record and a 0.69 goals against average.
F.C. Lahti won the Finnish League Cup in 2007 and advanced to the third round of the 2009 UEFA Europa League, narrowly losing to F.C. Brugge of the Belgium league.
McVea is the second Loyola player to sign a professional contract this spring. His classmate, Jamie Darvill (London, England/Bexley Grammar) will play for Real Maryland F.C. in the United Soccer League.
The duo makes it three Greyhounds in the past two seasons to sign professional contracts. Goalkeeper Milos Kocic (Leskovac, Serbia/Vojislav Nikolajevic) was drafted by D.C. United of Major League Soccer after graduating from Loyola in December 2008.
