Deasel And Darvill Win MISL Championship With Baltimore Blast
March 21, 2013
BALTIMORE - Mike Deasel and Jamie Darvill, two former Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer players, helped the Baltimore Blast to its seventh Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Championship on Saturday, March 16, while another alumni, Doug Miller of the Rochester Lancers, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
The Blast used four second-half goals at 1st Mariner Arena on Saturday, March 16 to claim an 8-6 victory against the Missouri Comets and secure the league championship. The title gave former Greyhound and current General Manager and President of the Baltimore Blast Kevin Healey his sixth league title in the last 15 years, and his first since 2009.
Healey’s hard work and dedication to the franchise, and to the growth of Baltimore soccer, helped lead the Blast to two back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004, and again in 2008 and 2009. He also brought the MISL title to Baltimore in 2006 and 2013. A 1977 Loyola graduate, Healey played on the 1976 NCAA Division II National Championship Greyhounds squad.
Deasel just concluded his second season with the Blast, playing in 19 games, including four playoff appearances. The defender contributed nine points on three two-point goals and three assists this season.
Darvill appeared in nine games for the Blast this season, his first, finishing the year with three points. He scored one two-point goal to go with one assist vs. Milwaukee on Feb. 23.
While at Loyola, Deasel and Darvill both helped Loyola to a school record three-consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances (2007, 08, 09). They were members of the 2008 squad that went undefeated in the regular season (17-0-1) and held a top-10 spot in the NSCAA/adidas poll for six-consecutive weeks, ranking as high as No. 6 in the nation. They helped Loyola to the 2007 and 2009 MAAC Championships, in addition to the 2007, 2008 and 2009 regular-season MAAC Championships.
Deasel was a four-year starter for the Greyhounds and was named to the NSCAA All-North Region Second Team in 2008. A Baltimore, Md., native, Deasel also earned two-straight All-MAAC Second Team accolades and three-straight MAAC All-Tournament Team honors throughout his career.
Darvill, from London, England, made his debut with the Blast this spring, after being added to the roster in November. A two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Year for the Greyhounds in 2008 and 2009, Darvill was also a two-time All-MAAC First Team selection both years and a MAAC All-Rookie Team honoree his freshman season. In 2008, he was named Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Year Third Team and NSCAA/adidas All-North Atlantic Region First Team.
Miller, a midfield/forward for the Rochester Lancers, had a record-breaking season at the age of 43, proving the veteran still had much to offer the game. A first-team All-MISL honoree this year and the first player in the current era of the MISL to surpass 100 points, finishing with 102, Miller also set a record for goals in a season this year, with 44, as he led the Lancers to within one win of the playoffs. He also finished the season with five game-winning goals and tied an MISL record with a six-goal game against Missouri.
A four-year letterwinner for the Greyhounds from 1987-1990, Miller served as a two-time team captain, was named the MAAC Player of the Year and has held the MAAC record for goals in a season since 1990, with 21 goals in 19 games.
