Ndjock's Game Winner In Overtime Gives Loyola Win On Senior Day

BALTIMORE - Sophomore Larry Ndjock scored the game-winning goal in overtime and senior Zach Kane recorded his first career shutout as the Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team concluded its season with a 1-0 win over Lafayette on Senior Day at Ridley Athletic Complex Saturday night.
Sophomore Dominic Marshall created the game-winning opportunity when he gained possession of a ball at midfield. Marshall dribbled up the field before playing a through ball to Ndjock at the top of the box. Ndjock’s left-footed strike from 17 yards out in the 95th minute marked his Patriot League-leading 12th goal of the season.
Loyola had an opportunity to take an early lead in the game when junior Connor Thompson played a ball up the left sideline to Ndjock. Ndjock settled the ball inside the left side of the box before dodging defenders, but his shot landed just outside of the left post and in the side netting.
Senior Stephen Dooley then touched a ball from Thompson on the right side to Marshall in the center of the field. Marshall’s right-footed strike from about 19 yards out sailed over the cross bar in the 29th minute though.
Loyola opened the second half with a few opportunities, including one in the first minute of the period. Dooley passed a ball to senior Diego McQuestion, who met the ball in the center of the field, maneuvered around defenders and sent a shot from the top of the box towards Leopards goalkeeper Nathan McDonald, who made the save.
Dooley found McQuestion again inside the box in the 58th minute, but McQuestion’s shot was blocked.
The Leopards had the next two scoring opportunities. The first was in the 67th minute when Peter Adubato’s shot hit off the cross bar. The second came in the 72nd minute, but freshman Ryan Tuck was able to disrupt Lafayette’s breakaway attempt.
In the 86th minute, Marshall gained control of the ball at midfield and dribbled up the field and into the box. He fired a 15-yard shot on goal, but McDonald was able to make the diving save by getting just enough of a hand on the shot to deflect it away from the goal.
In overtime, Ndjock just missed scoring the game winner in the 94th minute when he sent a shot across the face of the goal, barely missing the inside of the far post.
He answered in the next minute though, finishing the through ball from Marshall.
In goal, senior Thurman Van Riper, injured midway through the season, made the final start of his career, while classmate Zach Kane played 94:15 and stopped two shots in recording his first career shutout.
The game marked the final collegiate contest for Loyola’s senior class of Stephen Dooley, Zach Kane, Jamie Libby, Diego McQuestion and Thurman Van Riper. The group scored 23 goals, assisted 32 times, stopped 178 shots and helped Loyola to 26 shutouts and a four-year record of 39-27-7. They also helped the Greyhounds claim the 2012 MAAC Regular Season title.
“This senior class has worked tremendously hard over their four years,” head coach Mark Mettrick said. “They’ve been passionate about the program and they’ve been stellar in both the classroom and on the field. They’re quality young men, so we’ll miss them. They should be proud of their contributions to the program.”
Loyola concludes its season with a 7-8-2 overall record and a 2-6-1 mark in its inaugural year of Patriot League play.
