BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Omar Alfonso scored two goals and freshman goalkeeper Justin Chelland earned his third shutout of the season to help Loyola cruise to a 2-0 win over Canisius on Friday at Curley Field.

Alfonso got Loyola rolling with a free kick outside the 18 in the game's 11th minute. The game moved to the midfield for much of the next 20 minutes, but at 35:47, senior Jay Joyce and junior Kevin Nash set Alfonso up with his 13th goal of the year.

"It was a nice cross," says Alfonso. "I stopped the ball with my chest and was able to score quick."

It was only Loyola's third shot of the game, but it was all the Greyhounds would need behind a solid defense and Chelland's three saves.

Alfonso now leads the Greyhounds with 13 goals and 29 points on the year. He has scored five goals in Loyola's last three home games and has led the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in points for much of the season.

"As a forward, it's nice to put the ball in the net," says Alfonso. "But when I score, it's a result of many things. I've been fortunate all season."

Loyola fortunes improve with the win, moving the Greyhounds to 8-6-3 overall and to 5-2-1 in the MAAC.

"The MAAC is very tight right now," says Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick. "This is a big three points in the conference standings."

The 'Hounds close the regular season with Niagara at home tomorrow. That game is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Curley Field.
