Greyhounds Close Out Regular Season With Loss At Marist
Oct. 30, 2011
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 loss at Marist Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps Loyola’s six-game unbeaten streak and drops the Greyhounds to 10-5-2 this season, while Marist improves to 8-6-4.
With a 5-3-1 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, the Greyhounds will take the No. 3 seed into next week’s MAAC Championship. Marist will be the tournament’s fifth-seeded team with a 4-4-1 league record. Both teams will receive a first-round bye.
Marist outshot the Greyhounds in the first half of today’s game, 8-3, but Loyola had the first scoring opportunity. In the 36th minute, junior Gary Weisbaum sent a cross from down low to sophomore Geaton Caltabiano. The midfielder beat his defender, but was unable to get a shot past Marist’s goalkeeper, Steve Skonieczny, as he saved the attempt just inside the left post.
The Red Foxes, who held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks throughout the first half, then earned a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute when Krystian Witkowski sent a short corner to Anthony Rozmus. Rozmus played the ball across the middle to Lucas Szabo, who sent a shot past graduate senior goalkeeper Kyle Wittman for the game’s first goal.
Marist then took a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute when the Red Foxes weaved the ball through the Greyhounds’ defense, before Tim Garger sent a shot into the back of the net.
The Red Foxes secured their 3-0 victory in the 87th minute when Szabo’s shot hit off the post. The rebound went to Rozmus, who put it into the bottom left corner of the goal.
For the game, Marist held a 13-5 advantage in shots, while the two squads each had seven corner kicks.
Loyola will open competition at next week’s MAAC Championships on Friday, Nov. 4, facing No. 6 seed Manhattan at 11 a.m. The tournament will be played at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports at Disney.
Earlier this season, the Greyhounds earned a 3-0 victory at Manhattan (Oct. 7).
