Leitch's Header Lifts Seventh-Ranked Men's Team Over Fairfield, 2-1

Fairfield, Conn. - Sophomore Glenn Leitch headed in the game-winner in the 66th minute off a corner kick to break a tie and the Greyhounds' defense held strong the rest of the way to secure a 2-1 victory over Fairfield Sunday at Alumni Stadium to remain unbeaten on the season.
The win keeps No. 7 Loyola (14-0-1, 6-0 MAAC) unblemished on the season and caps off a 2-0 road trip over a pair of opponents who stand in the upper half of the MAAC. The Greyhounds ripped 12 shots on goal, compared to Fairfield's five.
Loyola wasted no time getting on the board. Junior Jamie Darvill found the back of the net four minutes into the contest on an assist from sophomore Daniel Ankrah. After Ankrah beat his man to the endline, he played a cross to a slashing Darvill, who connected on a header to the near-post to give Loyola the early 1-nil advantage.
The Stags (6-6, 3-2 MAAC) drew even at the 14th minute on a goal from Jack Burridge. Moving the ball with a nice combination of passes, Fairfield's Eric Illisije found Burridge open for the equalizer.
The Greyhounds pushed through at the 65:55 mark in the second half. On a well-struck right-left corner kick by Charlie Hutton, Leitch's glancing header found the upper-90 for the eventual game-winner.
Loyola had several scoring opportunities in a well-contested second half to add to its total. After a ball from Phil Bannister found his feet, freshman Ben Hanson had a 1-vs-1 against Fairfield keeper Justin Burse but Burse stoned the chance. Leitch, along with Darvill, also had a pair of late looks at the goal but could not convert. Darvill had a team-high six of the Greyhounds' 14 shots.

The Stags nearly got a late equalizer at the 87th minute mark. Service was played toward Loyola's box into a cluster of taller Fairfield forwards. One of the them poked a shot that nearly found the net but Hutton, standing at the goal-line, cleared the ball to end the threat.
Goalkeeper Milos Kocic had four saves in the contest. Fairfield posted 13 shots on the day.
Loyola will return to Evergreen on Friday for a 4 p.m. contest with Saint Peter's. On Sunday the team will take on Manhattan at 1 p.m., with Senior Day activities prior to the match.
