Mens Soccer Surges In Second Half, Remains Unbeaten with 4-2 Win Over Iona
Oct. 24, 2008
New Rochelle, N.Y. - Loyola scored two goals in a span of five minutes in the second half to overturn a 2-1 deficit and the seventh-ranked Greyhounds, behind five points from sophomore forward Phil Bannister, prevailed 4-2 over Iona at Mazzella Field to extend their unbeaten streak to a national-best 22 matches.
After Loyola conceded a goal in the 58th minute to go down by one, the Greyhounds (13-0-1, 5-0 MAAC) responded well with three unanswered goals of their own. Two of those goals came in a five-minute clip, the 63rd and 68th minutes. Loyola is now 20-0-2 in its last 22 matches.
Bannister found the net twice for his team-leading ninth and tenth goals of the season. He has now scored two goals in three of Loyola's last four matches. He also assisted on Darvill's game-capper for his fifth point of the match.
Loyola got on the board at the 15:31 mark. Steven Bantock played service into Iona's box and the ball was attempted to be cleared. Bannister recovered the ball though, and ripped a far-post shot for the goal.
The Gaels (8-4-1, 2-2 MAAC) drew even at the 36:58 clip on a goal by forward Rodrigo Faria.
After taking a 1-1 time into intermission, Giovanni Destovio put Iona up, 2-1, on a goal at the 57:51 mark.
In the 63rd minute, Bannister knotted the game at 2-2 on a beautiful rip. On a cross into the middle, Darvill challenged for the header, and the ball fell to Bannister, who ripped a side-volley shot that bounced past the keeper.
Junior Tennant McVea scored the game-winner just five minutes later at the 67:18 mark on a free kick from 40 yards out. McVea's shot was played into the box, and the goalkeeper had trouble with the slew of personnel in the box, letting the shot slip past him for the Loyola lead.
Darvill iced the contest at the 87th minute. After a corner kick was sent into the box, Darvill recovered an attempted clearance, and poked a goal into the net just beyond the reach of an Iona back.
Keeper Milos Kocic made four saves in 90 minutes of action for the win.
The Greyhounds return to action Sunday at Fairfield at 1 p.m.
