Men's Soccer Clipped By American Eagles
Oct. 22, 2003
GERMANTOWN, MD - Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Mulcahy registered nine saves and stopped a penalty kick, but it wasn't quite enough in Loyola's 3-1 loss to American on Wednesday night.
Loyola had early scoring opportunities playing against the wind in the first half. Freshman Danny Wheelan controlled an errand cross in the game's first three minutes and found himself open for shot in front of the cage. A good save by American goalkeeper Thomas Myers kept the game scoreless until the fourth minute.
"We really had some good scoring chances in the first five minutes," says Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick. "American, however, had the upper hand later in the game."
Loyola's 1-0 lead was threatened when Shawn Kukendall was awarded a penalty kick at point-blank range. Mulcahy, however, made a spectacular save to keep the one-goal lead.
American erased the Greyhound advantage with Peter Philipakos' goal at 9:55. Philipakos headed in a deflection off of another diving save by Mulcahy.
The game remained tied for 20 minutes and a second penalty kick opportunity for Kukendall resulted in an Eagles' score and a 2-1 halftime lead.
The Eagles tacked on an insurance goal in the second half, dropping Loyola to 7-5-3 overall. American took 19 shots while Loyola had seven. Mulcahy's nine saves is a career high and Alfonso's goal is his team-leading 11th of the season.
"American is a very good team," says Mettrick. "The bottom line is that they played better than we did tonight."
The Greyhounds look to rebound at George Mason on Saturday night. Loyola faces the Patriots, who are 8-4-4 this season, at 7 p.m. in Fairfax, Va.
