Quick Goals Lead Loyola Past Canisius, 2-0
Oct. 21, 2011
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team scored two quick goals to knock off Canisius Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest played at Ridley Athletic Complex.
With the win, Loyola improves to 9-4-1 this season, 4-2-0 in the MAAC and 6-2-0 at home. With the loss, Canisius drops to 3-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the league.
Loyola struck first, quicker than in any other game this season, sticking a goal into the back of the net in the fourth minute. Junior Hector Arellano intercepted a pass about 40 yards from the Griffs' goal and chested a pass to sophomore Geaton Caltabiano. The midfielder then split defenders and stuck a shot from just inside the box into the top left corner for his team-high sixth goal of the year. It is also the third-straight game in which Caltabiano has recorded a goal.
The Greyhounds then added a second score in the seventh minute as sophomore Stephen Dooley converted his third penalty kick of the season to give Loyola a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Diego McQuestion drew a foul in the box as he tried to weave around Canisius' goalkeeper, setting Dooley up for the play. Dooley's goal marks his fifth of the season.
Loyola looked to extend its lead at the beginning of the second half, as McQuestion sent a cross from the left side to a streaking Dooley, but Dooley's shot went just wide of the goal.
Canisius then challenged for a goal of its own in the 61st minute, sending a cross into play. The Griffs attempted to head the ball into the net, but Arellano poked a shot away from the line to preserve the shutout.
The clean sheet marks the fourth-straight shutout for graduate senior Kyle Wittman, and his eighth this season. It is also the 23rd shutout of his career.
At halftime, Loyola honored its 1976 NCAA Division II National Championship team that posted a 21-1-0 record. The celebration marked the 35th anniversary of the squad's accomplishment.
Loyola will return to action on Sunday for its final home game of the regular season. The Greyhounds will host Niagara at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, senior Wade McHugh will be honored as a part of Senior Day.
