Loyola Earns Third-Straight MAAC Win With 3-0 Victory Over Siena

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team won its third-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Siena at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Connor Thompson had a hand in all three goals, scored twice for the Greyhounds (8-5-1, 3-1-0 MAAC), while junior Stephen Dooley also tacked on a goal to give the Saints (7-6-0, 3-1-0) their first loss in conference play.
"We are very pleased with today's results," head coach Mark Mettrick said. "Siena is a good team, so it was nice to get early goals. I thought we played well in the first half and although we had some difficulty in the second, we managed to finish it out."
Loyola found an early lead in the contest behind a goal from Thompson in the sixth minute. The Saints attempted to clear the ball, but senior Hector Arellano sent it back into the box where Thompson sped past defenders in order to get a shot off. Siena's goalkeeper, Damian Liesemann, was able to get a foot on the ball, but it deflected into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The Greyhounds then added to their lead in the 23rd minute when Thompson send a ball to freshman Dominic Marshall in the corner. Marshall crossed a ball into the center of the field from the right corner where Dooley volleyed it before sent a shot straight into the left side of the goal.
Those looked to be the only goals of the game, but within the final 30 seconds, junior goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper cleared a ball to Thompson at the other end of the field. Thompson raced down the field, fought off a defender and ripped a shot past Liesemann as time expired to record the first multi-goal game of his career.
Defensively, Van Riper led the way with six saves to record his fifth shutout of the season, second in MAAC play.
The Greyhounds will head on the road next weekend for games at Iona and Fairfield. Loyola will face the Gales Friday at 3 p.m., before taking on the Stags Sunday at 1 p.m.
