Weisbaum's Game Winner Gives Loyola 2-1 Win Over Marist
Oct. 12, 2012
BALTIMORE - Senior Gary Weisbaum headed in a cross from freshman Dominic Marshall in overtime to secure the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Marist in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match played Friday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Marist (5-6-1, 1-2-0 MAAC) got on the board first, in the 70th minute, when Stephan Brossard dribbled the ball up the right side of the field before firing a shot into the right side of the goal.
Weisbaum then scored in the game winner in the 96th minute.
Marist had the first dangerous scoring chance of the match when Dylan Lee played a ball into the box, in which Nick Bramall headed from about 12 yards out in the 23rd minute. Sophomore Joey Cahalan sprinted in from the right side though and headed the ball off the goal line and up over the cross bar.
The Greyhounds created a counter attack within the next minute when senior Kevin Curran played a free kick into the box. Senior Gerwyn Jones met the ball and sent a header towards the goal, but Marist's goalkeeper, Anthony Sokalski, happened to be there to make the save.
In the opening minutes of the second half, junior Stephen Dooley was taken down just outside of the box in the center of the field. Dooley sent the free kick toward the top right corner of the goal, but Sokalski punched it away.
The Greyhounds looked to have broke through in the 37th minute when Weisbaum snuck a header into the right side of the goal, but he was called for being offsides, erasing the score. Dooley had played a ball on the right side ahead to senior Zach Tweddell who crossed it to Weisbaum just inside the post, but the goal was called off to keep the game scoreless at that point.
For the game, Marist held the advantage in shots, 17-13, although both recorded six shots on goal, while the Greyhounds held a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, junior Thurman Van Riper stopped five shots for Loyola, while Sokalski had four saves for the Red Foxes.
Loyola will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Siena at 1 p.m.
