RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory this season with a 3-0 win at Manhattan on Saturday night. Junior Hector Arellano, sophomore Vegard Vinje and freshman Connor Thompson scored for the Greyhounds.

Loyola improved to 6-4-1 with the win and 1-2-0 in the MAAC. With the loss, Manhattan fell to 0-11-0 this season and 0-2-0 in the league.

The Greyhounds' offense peppered Manhattan with shots in the first half before earning a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute behind Arellano's first collegiate goal. Sophomore Stephen Dooley took the corner kick on the play and sent the ball soaring across the face of the goal as Arellano weaved around defenders to get to the far post. Arellano got inside the Jaspers' defenders just in time to meet the ball and headed it back into the goal.

In the second half, Vinje worked around Manhattan's defenders and fired a shot off the side post and into the goal in the 70th minute for his second collegiate goal.

Thompson then gave Loyola a 3-0 advantage in the 79th minute with his second career score, sneaking between two defenders and squeezing a tough-angled shot into the goal from the lower left side.

That score held up for the rest of the contest, as graduate senior Kyle Wittman turned back one shot to record his MAAC-leading fifth shutout of the year and 20th of his career. George Ellis stopped four shots for Manhattan.

Throughout the game, the Greyhounds held the advantage in shots, 15-6, and corners, 9-3.

Loyola will return to action on Sunday as it heads to Saint Peter's to face the Peacocks at 1 p.m.
