Quinnipiac Hands Loyola 1-0 Loss In Non-Conference Finale

HAMDEN, CT - The Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac, as the Bobcats handed the Greyhounds a 1-0 loss at Quinnipiac Soccer Field.
William Cavallo scored the game-winner in the 53rd minute to lift the Bobcats to victory.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 2-3 on the season, while the Greyhounds wrap up their non-conference schedule with a 5-2-1 record.
Loyola out-shot the Bobcats, 10-4, in the opening half and held a 6-3 advantage in corners kicks, but the Greyhounds were unable to convert a shot into a goal, leading to a scoreless halftime.
In the second half, Cavallo took a shot that hit off the top of the cross bar before bouncing in to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 advantage in the 53rd minute.
The Greyhounds spent the rest of the half looking for the equalizer, but a header by sophomore transfer Geaton Caltabiano hit the cross bar in the 74th minute. A header by sophomore Jamie Libby was then called off due to a foul in the 81st minute and the Bobcats held on for the win.
For the game, Loyola outshot Quinnipiac, 20-15, and held an 11-4 advantage in corners.
In goal for Loyola, graduate senior Kyle Wittman finished with six saves, while Borja Angoitia stopped four shots to earn the shutout for Quinnipiac.
Loyola will return to action next weekend when it returns home to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Greyhounds will play Fairfield on Friday at 7 p.m., before hosting Iona on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Ridley Athletic Complex.
