Dooley Sparks Men's Soccer To 4-2 Victory Over James Madison
Sept. 22, 2012
BALTIMORE - Led by the return of junior Stephen Dooley and a flurry of second-half goals, the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team knocked off James Madison, 4-2, Saturday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Dooley, playing in just his second game of the season, scored two goals on his first two shots this year and tacked on two assists for a career-best six point performance. His six points marks the first time a Greyhound has had five-plus points in a game since Glenn Leitch had six versus Marist in 2010.
Freshman Larry Ndjock also had an impressive night, contributing four points on one goal and a career-best two assists, while classmate Dominic Marshall scored his first collegiate goal and junior Diego McQuestion tied a personal-best of two assists.
Loyola (4-3-1) took an early lead in the contest, scoring in the sixth minute, but James Madison (3-3-1) found its equalizer in the 22nd minute to send the Greyhounds into halftime tied with their opponents for the eighth time in as many games this season.
Marshall had got the scoring started when he finished a through ball from junior Stephen Dooley, sending it across the face of the goal and into the lower left corner.
The Dukes - owning a 1-0 upset win over top-ranked and 2011 NCAA Champions North Carolina from earlier this season - responded midway through the half though, when Christian McLaughlin played a corner kick into the box. Dale Robins-Bailey went up and met the ball, sending a header into the back of the net to tie the game at one apiece.
A flurry of second-half goals, sparked by the play of Dooley, then put the Greyhounds ahead for good. Junior goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper booted a goal kick about 75 yards to McQuestion, who headed it forward to Dooley in the 74th minute. The Preseason All-MAAC Team selection gathered the ball and went one-on-one with JMU's goalkeeper before sending a left-footed low shot from the right side past Colin Newcity and into the left corner of the goal for his first score of the year.
Dooley then knocked in a second-straight goal in the 79th minute to give the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead. Marshall started the play, sending a pass to senior Kevin Curran at midfield. Curran played a ball to Ndjock, who back heel flipped a pass to McQuestion. The Baltimore native pushed it forward to Dooley who flew past a defender and sent a shot from the left side past a diving goalkeeper.
Ndjock used the momentum and extended Loyola's lead in the 80th minute when he played give-and-go with Dooley. Ndjock gathered the ball at midfield and sent it ahead to Dooley. Dooley then gave it right back to a streaking Ndjock, who split defenders and beat the goalkeeper to the ball in the box. Ndjock gathered the loose ball and proceeded to send a shot into the empty net.
James Madison attempted a comeback, scoring in the 89th minute on a scramble play off a corner kick inside the box, but that's all that the Greyhounds' defense would allow, en route to the 4-2 victory.
In goal, Van Riper anchored the defense, posting three saves for the Greyhounds, even though the Dukes held a 25-8 advantage in shots. James Madison also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Loyola was efficient tonight though, as five of its eight shots were on goal, and four were scored - a season best.
The Greyhounds will look to build from this win when they host American Tuesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
