Loyola And Princeton Tie ... Again
Sept. 19, 2003
PRINCETON, NJ - When Mark Mettrick's team faces Princeton, you can bet that 110 minutes of soccer will be played. Friday night at Mercer Stadium was no different as Loyola and Princeton battled to a 1-1 tie, ending the contest in a draw for the fourth consecutive season.
It was a tale of two halves and although the Greyhounds scored first, it was the second half they dominated. In the first, Loyola opened up the scoring in the 35th minute with senior Jay Joyce netting his first goal of the year.
"I saw an opening in the middle," says Joyce. "I had lost my man and Nate [Lyden] put the ball on my foot."
Lyden contributed the assist and Loyola led 1-0. The Greyhounds would not get too comfortable with the lead because 1:29 later, Princeton sophomore Darren Spicer headed in the game-tying goal.
The game was knotted 1-1 at halftime with Princeton outshooting Loyola 8-2, while holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Greyhounds adjusted and set the tempo in the second half.
"We really played into their hands in the first half," says Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick. "In the second half we did a good job of spreading out the field and we played much better."
Loyola had four shots in the second period compared to zero shots for the Tigers. The 'Hounds also took the upper hand in corner kicks back, with four in the second period and two in overtime to give them a 7-6 edge on the night.
Mettrick runs his all-time record versus Princeton to 0-0-4, tying 1-1 in 2000, 0-0 in 2001, 1-1 in 2002 and now 1-1 in 2003. He also keeps his unbeaten overtime streak at Loyola alive with an overall overtime record of 13-0-7 at Evergreen.
The Greyhounds are now 3-2-1 this season and face Pennsylvania at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday at noon. The Quakers defeated Towson, 1-0, in Game One of the Princeton Invitational on Friday night.
