Men's Soccer Falls In Battle Of Baltimore Championship Game
Sept. 7, 2003
Towson, Md. - A furious second-half offensive push and a man advantage would not be enough for the men's soccer team at the 2003 Battle of Baltimore Classic. Loyola dropped its first game of the season, falling 2-1 to the Retrievers of UMBC at Towson University on Sunday afternoon.
All the scoring would take place in the game's first 22 minutes. UMBC's Derek McElligott opened things up with a goal at 10:56, taking a cross from teammate Danny Mongello to give the Retrievers a 1-0 lead. Kevin Nash answered with a tremendous goal from about 25 feet out, knocking the ball into the upper right corner of the goal.
"That was probably the nicest thing I've ever done on a soccer field," says Nash. "I knew I kicked it good, but not that good."
For Nash, it was his team-high third goal of the season. The score was knotted at 1-1, but only for seven minutes. Michael Joseph kicked the game-winner at 21:21, lifting UMBC to its first Battle of Baltimore championship.
A red card ejection with 11:31 left in regulation gave Loyola a man advantage, but the Greyhounds finished with five shots and five corner kicks on the day. Goalkeeper Greg Peters recorded four saves, but it was UMBC that blasted eight shots in its first-ever defeat of Loyola.
"It came down to experience," says Loyola coach Mark Mettrick. "I think UMBC is a good team and they closed the game down on us. We could not solve the problems they caused us offensively and in the end, we just didn't create enough chances."
UMBC improves to 3-0-1 on the year and to 1-17-2 versus Loyola. The Greyounds are now 2-1-0 and head to College Park for a match-up with top-ranked Maryland. Loyola faces the Terrapins at 7 p.m. this Wednesday night.
