Nash Does It Again
Sept. 5, 2003
Towson, Md. - Kevin Nash loves overtime. For the second straight game, his golden goal lifts Loyola to victory -this time a 2-1 victory over Navy on Friday afternoon at the Battle of Baltimore Classic.
Less than three minutes into the extra period, senior Jay Joyce led Nash with a beautiful pass off a Greyhound breakaway. Nash controlled and put the game away with his second game-winning goal of the season.
"This one feels better than the first one," says Nash. "This is an important tournament for us. It's for bragging rights in Baltimore."
The Battle of Baltimore, a four-team tournament won by Loyola each of the last two years, opened with the Greyhounds scoring right out of the gate. Freshman Omar Alfonso scored his first collegiate goal only 4:41 into the contest.
"It feels great to contribute," says Alfonso. "I've put a lot of pressure on myself on the offensive end and it was a relief to finally get a goal."
Senior Steve Coleman found Alfonso all alone in front of the cage and the freshman did the rest, giving the Greyhounds an early 1-0 lead. Navy, however, battled back and with 9:15 showing on the first-half clock, Matt Sanchez scored off a Jamie Coyle cross from the left side.
A physical second half resulting in no goals forced overtime for the second time this young season. Nash, who scored Loyola's game-winning goal in the season opener last Saturday versus Syracuse, was right on cue.
"It came down to quality," says Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick. "A quality pass, a quality finish - that was the difference today."
Loyola improves to 2-0 on the year, Navy drops to 0-2. The Greyounds play in the Battle of Baltimore championship game this Sunday, September 7. The 'Hounds face UMBC at Towson at 4:30 p.m.
