Men's Lacrosse Schedule Features New Additions, Renewed Rivalries
Dec. 19, 2013
BALTIMORE - Charley Toomey, head coach of Loyola University Maryland's men's lacrosse team, announced a 14-game regular-season schedule for the 2014 season that includes the Greyhounds' first games as members of the Patriot League, continuing rivalries with pas opponents and the renewal of challenges with the addition of games with the University of Virginia and Penn State University.
The schedule will test the Greyhounds, who finished the 2013 season with an 11-5 record and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, from the outset. Four of Loyola's first six games are against teams that also competed in last year's NCAA Tournament.
"We are excited that we have put together a very challenging schedule this year with the addition of our new Patriot League opponents, as well as familiar names from past schedules," Toomey said. "We are happy to add to great non-conference games in Virginia and Penn State, and we always look forward to playing two top Baltimore-area rivals in Towson and Johns Hopkins."
Loyola will open its schedule on Thursday, February 5, against Virginia, a team the Greyhounds will face for the first time since 1991. The Cavaliers will host Loyola in Charlottesville, Va., in the Greyhounds' earliest regular-season game in program history.
Penn State, the second new non-conference opponent on this year's slate, will then host the Greyhounds on Saturday, February 15, in State College, Pa. The Nittany Lions are Loyola's third-most played opponent all-time, but the teams have not faced off since their days as ECAC Lacrosse League foes ended after the 2009 season.
The Greyhounds host their first home game of the season at Ridley Athletic Complex when 2013 Colonial Athletic Conference Champion Towson University travels down the road for a game on Wednesday, February 19. The game will be the first of seven regular-season games for Loyola at Ridley.
Loyola's men's lacrosse tenure in the Patriot League officially begins three days later when it plays its first conference game on Saturday, February 22, in Worcester, Mass., at College of the Holy Cross.
The Greyhounds have a week off before playing their next game, another conference road test at two-time defending Patriot League champion Lehigh University. The Mountain Hawks will host Loyola on Saturday, March 1, in Bethlehem, Pa.
Back-to-back home games are next up for the Greyhounds, leading off with a Sunday, March 9, date with 2013 NCAA Champion Duke University. The teams last faced off in last year's NCAA Tournament First Round, an instant classic-type game that saw the Blue Devils prevail, 12-11, in double overtime.
Loyola will face the U.S. Military Academy at Ridley on Saturday, March 15. The Greyhounds and Black Knights have played just once in the past, but not since the 1943 season, Loyola's sixth as a varsity program.
The Greyhounds travel to Washington, D.C., for a midweek game at rival Georgetown University on Wednesday, March 19, before returning home for a Saturday, March 22, game against Lafayette College. That contest will be part of a Loyola doubleheader with the Greyhounds' women's team facing Lehigh University later in the afternoon.
Consecutive Patriot League road games are next for Loyola, starting on Saturday, March 29, when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y., for a game at Colgate University. The Greyhounds then play much closer to home on Saturday, April 5, making a quick jaunt to Annapolis, Md., to face the U.S. Naval Academy.
Loyola hosts first-year Division I program, and fellow Patriot League newcomer, Boston Unviersity on Saturday, April 12, before closing out League play at Ridley on Thursday, April 17, against Bucknell University.
The next week will serve as the Patriot League Championship, a tournament that the top six teams in the conference will qualify for. Seeds three through six will play in quarterfinal games on Tuesday, April 22, with the higher seed hosting each contest. The regular-season champion will then host the semifinals on Friday, April 25, and the championship game on Sunday, April 27.
A week after the tournament, Loyola will close its regular-season with its Charles Street neighbor, Johns Hopkins University. The Greyhounds will host the Blue Jays on Saturday, May 3, at Ridley.
Times for all 2013 games will be announced at a later date, as will the Greyhounds' television schedule. All dates and games are subject to change; visit LoyolaGreyhounds.com for the most up-to-date information.
