Men’s Lacrosse Welcomes 12 To Class of 2020

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland head coach Charley Toomey, the Greyhounds men’s lacrosse staff and several returning players welcomed 11 newcomers to the program on Thursday at an annual luncheon before the freshmen embark on their Fall Welcome Weekend programming at the University.

Eleven freshmen will join the locker room when fall conditioning and practices begin for the Greyhounds: Cole Boland (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Regis Jesuit), Wiley Bonham (Alamo, Calif./Monte Vista), Riley Cox (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), Nick Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena), Logan Devereaux (Marietta, Ga./The Westmister Schools), Matt Higgins (Marietta, Ga./Blessed Trinity), Alex Johnson (Blaine, Minn./Culver Military Academy), Ryan McNulty (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), John Railey (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep), Peter Swindell (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Joe Tabor (Alamo, Calif./Monte Vista) and A.J. Traynor (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep).

 

 

"It's always a good day when we get to bring our new players into the program and welcome their families to the Loyola lacrosse family," Toomey said. "We are looking forward to starting work on the field and in the weight room soon, and these men are going to be a part of that effort."

Meet The New Greyhounds

Cole Boland

Midfield
Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Regis Jesuit

Cole Boland
Before Loyola: Was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado… Scored 47 goals and assisted on 31 during his career… Earned All-League First Team honors as a senior in addition to All-State Second Team recognition… Was a four-time All-League performer after picking up second team laurels in his first three seasons… Helped Regis Jesuit win the state title in 2014 and 2016… The team was also runners-up in 2015… Tallied 25 goals and 10 assists to go with 30 ground balls as a senior in 2016… Also lettered in football as a sophomore… Played club lacrosse for 3d Lacrosse… Named an Adrenaline All-American in 2016.

Personal: Cole Luke Boland… Son of Nancy and Luke Boland… Has two siblings, Kiley and Claire… Logged 75 hours of community service as a high school student… Served as a student teacher at an elementary school for four weeks.


Wiley Bonham

Before Loyola: Was a four-year letterwinner at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California… In three seasons – he did not play as a junior due to injury – he scored 150 goals to go with 69 assists for 219 career points… Was named the East Bay Athletic League Most Valuable Player and to the All-EBAL First Team following his senior season in 2016… Scored 70 goals and assisted on 35 that year… Helped Monte Vista win the EBAL title and California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section title in 2016… Tallied 48 goals and 17 assists as a sophomore in 2014 after opening his high-school career with 32 goals nad 17 assists in 2013… Played club lacrosse for the Alcatraz Outlaws, helping his team win the 2016 Gait Cup.


Riley Cox

Midfield

Before Loyola: Graduated from Cold Spring Harbor (New York) High School where he was a four-year letterwinner in both ice hockey and lacrosse… Helped the Seahawks in the 2015 and 2016 New York State titles… Earned USLacrosse High School All-America honors in 2016 after scoring 58 points with 42 goals and 16 assists… Was the 2016 recipient of the John Driscoll Award as Nassau County’s Midfielder of the Year… Also earned Nassau County All-Academic honors and was a team captain for the Seahawks… Scored 27 goals and assisted on nine as a junior in 2015 after posting 11 and three in 2014… Finished his high school career with 83 goals and 30 assists… Played club lacrosse for Team 91… Was a member of the US Box Lacrosse U-18 National Team and played on the squad’s 2015 tour of British Columbia.

Before Loyola: Riley Mason Cox… Son of Amanda and Rob Cox… Has a brother, Gleeson, and a sister, Annabelle.


Nick Cunningham

Attack
Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena

Before Loyola: Was a standout in both lacrosse and basketball at West Genesee High School in Fairmount, New York… Earned All-League First Team honors in lacrosse and Second Team recognition in basketball as a senior (2014-2015)… Scored 50 goals and tallied 19 assists that season while leading the Wildcats to the league, Section 3 and region titles, as well as a New York State runner-up finish… Was also a scholar-athlete for both basketball and lacrosse… Scored 14 goals and had 13 assists as a junior in 2013-2014… As a basketball player for the Wildcats, averaged 17.9 points and 4.1 assists in 2014-2015 and 13.1 points and 4.0 assists the year prior.

Personal: Nicholas Gordon Cunningham… As a college freshman in 2015-2016, attended Siena College in Loudonville, New York, where he was a basketball player for former Loyola head coach Jimmy Patsos… Saw action in 10 games and averaged 1.2 points… Made 10-of-12 free throws for the Saints… His older brother, Jimmy, is a member of the men’s lacrosse team at Providence College as a starting defenseman… Grandfather, Jim Cunningham, scored 1,744 points in three seasons at Fordham University and was a third-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics in 1958.


Logan Devereaux

Marietta, Ga./The Westminster Schools

Before Loyola: Lettered in lacrosse and basketball at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta… Earned All-America honors from USLacrosse following his senior season in 2016… Also earned All-Georgia 5A First Team recognition that season after picking up Third Team recognition in 2014… Was a team captain in 2016 and scored 54 goals and assisted on 38 as a senior... Led Westminster to the state title game in 2016, as well as championships in 2013 and 2015 and a 2014 quarterfinals apperance… Helped Westminster go 74-12 over his four years at the school... Was injured and did not play as a junior... Played club lacrosse for Thunder Lacrosse... Named to the King of the Hill All-Star Team.

Personal: Logan Devereaux... Son of Jane and Paul Devereaux... Has an older brother, Keegan, and a twin sister, Lindsay... His father, Paul, played lacrosse at the U.S. Military Academy from 1981-1985, helping the Black Knights make to four NCAA Tournament appearances... Member of the National Honor Society and was a four-year member of the honor roll... Was a student board member of the AJO4LAX (Andrew J. Oswald Memorial Fund), a non-profit organization that promotes safe teen driving and smarter teen choices through fundraising and promotion of youth and high school lacrosse in Georgia.


Matt Higgins

Midfield
Marietta, Ga./Blessed Trinity

Before Loyola: Was a seven-time letterwinner – four in lacrosse and three in football – at Blessed Trinity High School in Roswell, Georgia… Was a two-time USLacrosse All-American and First Team All-State performer for the Titans in lacrosse as a junior and senior… Scored 59 goals and assisted on 35 during his final season in 2016… Finished his high school career with 151 goals, 123 assists and 274 points… Scored 41 and 32 as a junior in 2015 after finishing his sophomore year with 31 goals and 33 assists to earn All-State Second Team recognition… Tallied 20 goals and 23 assists during his freshman campaign… Helped the Titans reach the state playoffs all four seasons, including the state semifinals in 2016… Garnered All-State Honorable Mention as wide receiver for the Blessed Trinity football team in 2014 as a junior… Holds three school football records… Led the Titans to the state title game in 2015 after they reached the semifinal round in 2014… Played club lacrosse for the Georgia Thunder.

Personal: Matthew James Higgins… Son of Avelina and Michael Higgins... Has two older sisters, Meghan and Kelly, and a younger brother, Thomas... Was a member of the Student Advisory Board for the AJO4Lax Foundation, an Atlanta-based charity promoting lacrosse and safe teen driving.


Alex Johnson

Defense
Blaine, Minn./Culver Military Academy

Before Loyola: Graduated from Culver (Indiana) Military Academy where he attended from 2014-2016… Attended Blaine (Minnesota) High School from 2012-2013… Was a seven-time letterwinner in high school, earning letters in football in 2013 and 2014 and lacrosse from 2012-2016… As a defenseman, posted 27 goals and 89 assists throughout his high school career… Earned All-Midwest First Team honors in 2016 when he scored seven goals and assisted on 21… Helped Culver win MSLCL titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016… The Eagles also won the 2016 Inter-AC championship and the 2014 NALI crown during his tenure at the academy… Helped Blaine to sectional runners-up finishes in 2012 and 2013… Played club lacrosse for Team Minnesota… Was an all-star at the Denver Shootout, the Notre Dame camp, the Maverick Showtime event, the King of the Hill and Hot Beds tournament.

Personal: Alex Christopher Johnson... Son of Wendy and Joe Johnson... Has an older brother, Cody.


Ryan McNulty

Before Loyola: Earned letters in lacrosse, football and basketball at Bishop Shanahan High School in Downingtown, Pennsylvania… Was a two-time USLacrosse All-American, earning the honor after his junior and senior seasons in 2015 and 2016… As a long-stick midfielder, picked up 503 ground balls and caused 151 turnovers during his career… Was also a terrific transition scorer, finishing his four seasons with 34 goals and 49 assists… Helped the Eagles to a 57-14 record over four seasons, incluing 18-win years his final three seasons… Named to the Under Armour All-American Team as a senior after participating in the Underclass All-America games as a sophomore and junior… Was the Philadelphia Daily News All-Area Player of the Year in 2016 after also being named the Chesmont League Most Valuable Player… Scored 12 goals and assisted on 16 while picking up 136 ground balls and causing 42 turnovers as a senior… Was named the No. 1 defenseman nationally in the Class of 2016 by Inside Lacrosse, earning the No. 4 overall player recognition… Three-time All-State honoree and a four-time All-Chesmont performer… Was the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Player of the Year in 2015 after scoring 10 goals to go with 13 assists, 127 ground balls and 36 caused turnovers… Had eight goals, 14 assists, 123 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers as a sophomore and four goals, six assists, 117 ground balls and 38 caused turnovers in his freshman year… Played club lacrosse for Team ManUp, Mesa Fresh and Freedom… Selected for the U-19 Team USA 108 and played on the FCA National Teams in Orlando, Lake Placid and Vail.

Named to the Bishop Shanahan Leadership Council… Founder and president of the Fellowship of Catholic Athletes Club, was an Athletic Class representative, a prayer captain, Kairos leader and member of the Community Service Club… Particiapted in the Philadelphia Youth Mission and Steubenville Youth Conference.


John Railey

Defense

Before Loyola: Earned letters in lacrosse, basketball and soccer at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland… Earned All-Met First Team honors from The Washington Post in 2016 in addition to being named the team’s Most Valuable Player and to the All-League First Team… Was a 2015 and 2016 Preseason All-American by USA Today… Two-time All-State First Team and All-League First Team honoree in 2015 and 2016… Also was an All-Met Second Team player in 2015… Helped the Hoyas win the 2014 Interstate Athletic Conference title and finish with a No. 4 ranking nationally.

Personal: John Railey… Son of Katherine and Jack Railey... Has two older siblings, Caroline and Will, and a younger sister, Margaret... Father, Jack, played basketball at James Madison University, and his older brother, Will, is on the lacrosse team at the University of Virginia.


Peter Swindell

Midfield
New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan

Before Loyola: Graduated from New Canaan (Connecticut) High School where he lettered in lacrosse and football… Was a two-time All-State and All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference honoree in 2015 and 2016 for the Red Rams’ lacrosse team… Scored 30 goals and assited on 23 as a senior in 2016 after tallying 27 goals and 12 assists as a junior the year prior… Led the Red Rams to state lacrosse titles in 2015 and 2016… Was a two-time All-State and All-FCIAC football player, as well, earning the laurels in 2013 and 2015 as a sophomore and senior… Caught 12 touchdown passes and scored 71 points as a kicker in 2015 after tallying 42 points kicking in 2014 and 115 in 2013… Helped New Canaan win state football titles his final three seasons… Played club lacrosse for Eclipse Lacrosse Club.

Personal: Peter Swindell… Son of Susie and Jim Swindell... Has an older sister, Lisa, and a younger brother, Walker... Was a 14-time member of the Acacdemic Honor Roll and the 2015-2016 recipient of the Kiwanis Club Sportsmanship Award… Also received the Bob’s Sports Don Guenin Sports Award… Comes from a family of former collegiate athletes, including his father (Denison University, lacrosse), grandfathers (University of Virginia, lacrosse; Lehigh University, football), uncles (Ohio Wesleyan University, football; Brown University, lacrosse; Saint Lawrence University, football and lacrosse).


Joe Tabor

Before Loyola: Was a three-year letterwinner at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California… Posted a 68 percent save percentage as a senior in 2016 while yielding just 4.9 goals against per game… Earned Lacrosse Magazine West Region Player of the Year honors in 2016 after earning All-East Bay Athletic League First Team honors… Was an East Bay High School Athlete of the Week and a two-time East Bay Star of the Week in 2016… Named the Monte Vista Defensive Most Valuable Player as senior… Helped Monte Vista win the EBAL title and California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section title in 2016… In his first year as a full-time starter, posted 57.1 percent save percentage with a 7.4 goals-against average in 2015… Played club lacrosse for the Alcatraz Outlaws, helping them win the 2016 Gait Cup… Also played for ADVNC and 3d NorCal Select… Was a 2015 Elite 100 All-Star and a 2016 Adreneline All-American… Had the highest save percentage at the 2014 Inside Lacrosse Recruiting Invitational (Session One)… Also earned All-Star honors at the 2014 Gait Cup and King of the Hill events.

Personal: Joseph MacDonald Tabor… Earned Sports Medicine All-Ameircan honors and was on the Principal’s Honor Roll for three years.

Before Loyola: Lettered in lacrosse and soccer at Malvern (Pennsylvania) Preparatory School… Earned All-Main Line Second Team honors in soccer as a senior after earning All-Inter AC Second Team recognition as a sophomore, junior and senior… Helped the Malvern lacrosse team win the 2013 and 2014 Inter AC titles… Played club lacrosse for Mesa Fresh.

Personal: Andrew Traynor… Son of Beth and Kevin Traynor… Old brother, Tripp, plays lacrosse at Penn State… Has three younger brothers, Jack, Matthew and Kyle.
