Pair Of Men’s Lacrosse Alums Named To Team USA Roster
SPARKS, Md. - Two Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse alumni – Joe Fletcher ’14 and Scott Ratliff ’13 – have been named to the USLacrosse Men’s Senior National Team roster for the upcoming exhibition game that will celebrate the grand opening of the governing body’s suburban Baltimore headquarters.
The duo will be on the United States roster for an intrasquad scrimmage as part of a tripleheader on Sunday, September 11 at the new USLacrosse headquarters.
The tripleheader opens with the U.S. women’s team at 10 a.m., a team that includes Loyola women’s alumna Taryn Van Thof ’15. Following that intrasquad event, the U.S. men’s team plays at 1 p.m., and the event closes with a special exhibition between the lacrosse teams from the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at 4 p.m.
Fletcher, who is a member of the Greyhounds’ current staff as the director of operations, and Ratliff recently completed seasons in Major League Lacrosse where the two are standout defenders. The duo were both MLL All-Stars, and they finished third (Ratliff) and fifth (Fletcher) in voting for this year’s Defensive Player of the Year honors.
A defender for the New York Lizards, Fletcher was named to the All-MLL team on Friday for the second year in a row. In 13 games this season, he picked up 51 ground balls, second on the team only to the Lizards’ All-MLL faceoff specialist Greg Gurenlian. He was a three-time All-American for the Greyhounds and was the 2015 MLL Defensive Player of the Year.
Fletcher also was a member of the 2014 U.S. National Team 30-man training roster that prepared for the World Championships, an event in which the Red and Blue came home with a gold medal.
Ratliff has established himself as the professional game’s premier long-stick midfielder, particularly in transition. This season, he finished fifth on his hometown Atlanta Blaze in scoring with 20 points, tops in the League among defensemen. The fourth-year pro scored nine goals, four of the 2-point variety, and had seven assists.
He was also sixth in the league in both ground balls (73) and caused turnovers (16).
Ratliff and Fletcher both have National Team experience, in addition to that of Fletcher. Both participated in the 2016 Team USA Spring Premiere.
