Greyhounds Continue Classroom Excellence

May 30, 2017

BALTIMORE -- Loyola University Maryland student-athletes continued their outstanding work in the classroom during the 2016-2017 academic year, setting records for cumulative grade-point averages in the fall semester only to break them in the spring. The Greyhounds' more than 400 student-athletes posted a combined 3.397 GPA during the spring semester, the best in recorded history. That mark edged the fall standard of 3.370 that was the previous high. Additionally, a record 31 student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring, tying the Spring 2016 mark for the most ever.

Cumulatively, student-athletes raised their overall cumulative GPA to 3.330, a bump from the end of the fall semester's 3.275 that was also the best in school history. A total of 152 Greyhounds were named to the Loyola Dean's List in the spring, bringing the total for the academic year to 315 who achieved that plateau.

"Our student-athletes continue to perform at very high levels in the classroom, and we are as proud of their accomplishments," said Jim Paquette, Loyola's Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics. "They spend a tremendous amount of time balancing the rigors of our academic curriculum, commitments to their team and any number of other activities, community service and leadership opportunities they have at Loyola.

"We owe a special thanks to our Student-Athlete Support Services staff -- Colleen Campbell, Mark Fusiak and Andrea Hoffman -- as well as our coaches and other members of the University community for the significant role they play in our student-athletes academic success."

Over the last six academic years, student-athletes' cumulative GPAs have risen to the current mark from 3.084 in 2011-2012.

Sixteen of the Greyhounds' teams finished the spring semester with a GPA better than 3.1, both cumulatively and for the term; eight checked in at 3.5 or higher for the semester. The women's track and field team leads the athletic department with a cumulative GPA of 3.551, while the women's basketball team had a spring GPA of 3.684, topping the department.
