Men's Lacrosse Team Will Take Its Game To Europe Thursday

BALTIMORE - While the 2009 NCAA men's lacrosse season officially came to a close in exciting fashion on Memorial Day, Loyola has continued preparation and practice as it gears up for its upcoming European trip.

On Thursday, May 28, the Loyola lacrosse team, including graduated seniors, coaches and staff, will cross the Atlantic Ocean and embark on a ten-day trip that will take them to four countries--Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland--to play five games in what should culminate in one unforgettable experience.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity to see a beautiful part of the world while playing against some elite international competition," said Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey. "It's a very exciting experience that our players and staff are looking forward to, one that's important for our development and growth as a team."

The travel parties will depart at 2 and 7 p.m. on Thursday from Washington D.C. with the last groups arriving in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, on Friday at 4:35 p.m. After a bit of sightseeing that evening, Loyola hits the field on Saturday, May 30. Loyola will play two matches against two Scotland National teams, with the action beginning at 1:30 p.m.

On Sunday morning, the team will travel to Manchester via the Scottish scenic route. En route, the party will stop by Jedburgh, the jewel of Scottish border towns, with free time to explore Jedbourgh Abbey, Jedburgh Castle and Jail Mary Queen of the Scots House. Dinner at the hotel that evening will culminate the day.

A trip to Liverpool begins Monday. While there, the team will visit St. Alberts Dock or opt to visit the Beatles Museum. At 4:30 p.m. Loyola will play a friendly against the England Select Team at Wilmslow, with an aftermatch barbeque and social closing the day.

On Tuesday, the team will have the morning free in Manchester, the vibrant capital of the north. While there, the team will partake in on some shopping and get a chance to see the classic Victorian mills, neo-Gothic halls and angular contemporary architecture. At 3:30, the group will travel to Stockport and engage in a training session with a Stockport club team. The team will return to their hotel at 9:30 that night.

 

 

Loyola gets back to action on Wednesday, when they play the English Select Team at Wilmslow Stadium at 7 p.m. with an aftermatch barbeque and social. Prior though, the team will travel to the historic Roman city of Chester that morning.

On Thursday, the team will rise early and fly to Dublin, Ireland, where they will arrive at 8:15 a.m. After a taxi ride to the famous Burlington Hotel, the team will tour the Guinness Museum and Brewery during the day, with dinner and a free evening.

More sightseeing of Dublin will take up Friday. At 10:30 a.m., the team will board a bus for a half-day sightseeing tour of the city, with stops at the Phoenix Park, Museum of Modern Art,Jamieson Whiskey Store, Kilmainham Jail, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Trinity College.

On Saturday, the final full day of the trip, the team will depart for Kildare, a county in Ireland, with a unique visit to the Japanese Gardens and the National Stud. That evening in Kilkenny, the team will play its final match of the trip against the Irish National Team at University City College, with a night out in Dublin following.

Loyola will depart on Sunday, June 7. The group will fly to Paris, with the last flight at 9:30 a.m.
