Following Four-Goal Performance, Sawyer Named ECAC Rookie of the Week
April 6, 2009
BALTIMORE - After scoring a career-high four goals in Loyola's victory over Rutgers , freshman Mike Sawyer was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday by league representatives. Loyola, which improved to 3-1 in the conference standings and 6-4 overall with the win, maintained both its 15th and 16th positions in the USILA Coaches poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media rankings.
It is the second time in four weeks that Sawyer, a native of Charlotte, N.C. (Charlotte Catholic), has won the award.
The midfielder spearheaded the Loyola attack against Rutgers in a 12-9 road victory. He scored three of his career-best four goals in the first half, opening the game with a goal 6:06 into the first period off a high putaway from the right alley. He found the net twice in the second period.
Sawyer would score his fourth of the day in the third period during a 3-0 spree that lifted Loyola to a commanding 10-5 lead.
"It is good to see new faces like Mike step up on the offensive end," said Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey. "We are going to need that type of production down the road if we hope to continue to be successful."
His eight goals on the season are now tied with senior Jimmy Daly for most by a Loyola midfielder. Sawyer has started nine consecutive games since the February 21st matchup against Towson. He was also named Rookie of the Week back on March 16th after scoring three goals and an assist in wins over Bryant and St. John's.
Massachusetts' Tim Balise and Penn State's Drew Adams were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. The Greyhounds share their 15th position in the Coaches poll with Colgate and Harvard.
Loyola, currently in second place in the ECAC, continues play on Saturday with a trip to No. 18 Georgetown. The match is slated for 1 p.m. and will be shown live on MASN.
