Ratliff Named Finalist For Senior CLASS Award
April 3, 2013
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Loyola University Maryland long-stick midfielder Scott Ratliff has been named one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's lacrosse.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 20 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website or on the Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through May 13. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.
Ratliff has continued his play as one of the top defensive midfielders in the country this season and through 10 games, he leads the Greyhounds in ground balls (50) and caused turnovers (19). He has also continued his scoring in the transition game, logging seven goals and three assists.
A third-team All-American a year ago from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), Ratliff was also a preseason All-America second team honoree this year.
In his time at Loyola, Ratliff has played in 52 games, picking up 190 ground balls and causing 78 turnovers. He has also scored 23 goals and assisted on 13 more. His 36 career points rank second among active long-pole defenders.
Ratliff's 190 ground balls currently rank 10th in Loyola's Division I history (since 1982), and his 78 caused turnovers are just 12 off the school record of 90 set by P.T. Ricci.
He is a communication major with an emphasis in public relations and advertising and was a member of the Dean's List in the Fall 2012 semester. Ratliff has also led youth lacrosse clinics for inner-city students in his native Georgia.
Ratliff is the first Loyola men's lacrosse player to be named a finalist for the award, which is in its fifth year of existence.
The Greyhounds and Ratliff will be back on the field Saturday, April 6, at 2:30 p.m. when they host Fairfield University in an ECAC Lacrosse League contest. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the Loyola women hosting Georgetown University at 12 noon.
