Jan. 24, 2018

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse junior Pat Spencer was one of 11 players named to the inaugural United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Preseason Player of the Year Watch List.

The list, which is derived from previous All-Americans and coaches' nominations was culled to the current group by the USILA All-America Committee. Updates to the watch list will be announced in March and April with three finalists for the award announced on May 7. This year's winner will be named at NCAA Championship Weekend in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Spencer is a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and has earned USILA All-America honors each of his two seasons at Loyola (second team in 2016, first in 2017).

Last year, Spencer became the first Patriot League player to receive the Offensive Player of the Year award in his first two collegiate seasons. He was also the first Greyhounds attacker to be named to the first team since Loyola Hall of Famer Jim Blanding was selected as a sophomore in 1990.

Spencer finished his sophomore season with 28 goals and a school- and Patriot League-record 55 assists. His 83 points are tied for fourth-most in Loyola's single-season history. One of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's top player, he led the Patriot League in both assists (3.44) and points (5.19) per game, totals that are second and sixth, respectively, in NCAA Division I entering NCAA Championship Weekend.

In a March game against College of the Holy Cross, Spencer dished out nine assists, setting a Patriot League single-game record while also matching the Loyola game record set in 1981 by Gary Hanley. In just 34 career games, Spencer has recorded 172 total points to rank eighth in Loyola's career history. He is one of just three Greyhounds players to have 100 or more assists in a career, and his 107 rank third at the school.

The other 10-member of the watch list are: Connor Fields (Albany), Trevor Baptiste (Denver), Ben Reeves (Yale), Gerard Arceri (Penn State), Connor Kelly (Maryland), Tre Leclaire (Ohio State), John Sexton (Notre Dame), Chris Sabia (Penn State), Ben Randall (Ohio State) and Grant Ament (Penn State).

Spencer and the Greyhounds will open the 2018 regular-season on Saturday, February 10 in a 1 p.m. game at the University of Virginia. Fans can get their first look at the Greyhounds on Saturday, January 27 when Loyola hosts the University of North Carolina in a 12 noon exhibition game. It will also be the first opportunity to purchase men's lacrosse single-game tickets as the Ridley Athletic Complex box office will be open during the scrimmage.
