No. 1 Men's Lacrosse Leads Wire-To-Wire In Win At Hobart
April 21, 2012
GENEVA, N.Y. - Mike Sawyer and Eric Lusby combined to score seven goals, and the top-ranked Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team lead wire-to-wire on Saturday afternoon, finishing its ECAC Lacrosse League regular-season schedule undefeated with a 17-6 win at Hobart College.
Sawyer finished with four goals and an assist, while Lusby tacked on three goals and an assist. Fellow Tewaaraton Award candidate Scott Ratliff scored a goal, assisted on two, caused four turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Davis Butts added two goals and an assist, while J.P. Dalton scored two.
Loyola's win moved it's record to 12-0 overall this season, and the Greyhounds closed conference play 6-0. They will be the top seed in the May 2-4 ECAC Championships in Denver. Loyola will take on the fourth-seeded host Pioneers, while Fairfield University and Ohio State University will battle in the other semifinals.
The Greyhounds' 12-0 start to the year equals the best in program history, matching the 1999 team that won all 12 of its regular-season games. Loyola's current 12-game winning streak also is tied for the longest in school history, again matching the 1999 squad, as well as the 1998 team that reeled off 12 in a row after losing in the second week of the season.
Loyola scored the game's first five goals, starting when Josh Hawkins scored in transition 1:27 into the contest.
Loyola outshot Hobart (3-9, 1-4), 42-36, and picked up 31 ground balls to the Statesmen's 28. Joe Fletcher led the way with five off the ground, and goalkeeper Jack Runkel had four in addition to eight saves.
The Greyhounds scored three times in the game's first four minutes, sparked by Hawkins' goal that came after a Ratliff caused turnover.
Dalton won the second faceoff to Butts, and Lusby scored in a settled set at 12:19. Byrnes scored just 37 seconds later when Runkel denied a Hobart shot off the restart, and Loyola quickly cleared the ball to make it 3-0.
Butts scored off a Lusby assist at 7:06, and Sawyer made it 5-0 with a goal at 5:21.
Hobart got on the board with 3:05 to go in the quarter when Alex Love scored his first of three, but Sawyer got the Greyhounds' lead back to five, 6-1, less than a minute later, scoring off a face-off win at 2:17.
The Greyhounds made it a 7-6 advantage as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter when Kyle Duffy scored his first collegiate goal on a Ratliff assist.
Cam Stone tallied one at 12:16 in the second quarter for Hobart, and after a nearly nine-minute lull in scoring, Lusby took a Byrnes pass and scored with 3:49 left in the half.
Love and Jake Silberlicht scored two for the Statesmen - Silberlicht's came with just four seconds left in the second, pulling Hobart within four, 8-4, at the break. It was the closest, however, the Statemen would draw for the remainder of the game.
Loyola scored four in a row to start the third quarter - the goals coming from Ratliff, Sean O'Sullivan, Dalton and Lusby - to push the lead to 12-4 with 4:18 to play on Lusby's third.
After Hobart closed the third with goals at 2:50 and 2:02 to make it 12-6, Loyola tallied five unanswered in the fourth quarter. Dalton scored, Sawyer had two, and Will Fredericks scored the first of his career on an assist by Brian Schultz, the first of his tenure as a Greyhound.
The Greyhounds will close their 2012 regular-season on Saturday, April 28, when they host Johns Hopkins University at 1 p.m. Click here to order tickets to the game.
