Men's Lacrosse Finds Offense In 13-7 Win Over Notre Dame
March 20, 2004
Baltimore, Md. - Stephen Brundage scored three goals and added an assist as Loyola rolled past Notre Dame at Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday afternoon. With seven goals from the starting attack and seven total goal scorer's for the 'Hounds, Loyola's offense came alive in a 13-7 win over the Irish.
"Getting that first goal really calmed me," says Monfett. "I think the more we scored, the more confident and comfortable we became. Scoring early was key."
Freshman Andrew Spack made the count 2-0 with an unassisted tally at 6:44 of the first quarter. The 'Hounds took the next faceoff, junior Matt Dupuis found a streaking senior Stephen Brundage, and nine seconds after scoring their second goal, the Greyhounds led 3-0. Brudage scored 59 seconds later and the 'Hounds were officially rolling.
"We've been getting good shots all season, but for some reason, they just weren't going in," says Brundage. "I really can't explain it, but sure feels good to get the offense rolling."
Loyola led 5-1 after the first quarter, winning 6-of-7 faceoffs and posting 13 groundballs to Notre Dame's six. Junior Pat Shek, who made his first start at attack, scored to close the first quarter, and with Halip and Monfett finding the cage early in the second quarter, the Greyhounds held a commanding 7-1 lead.
The Fighting Irish, however, did put up a fight and by scoring four of the game's next five goals, they had pulled within 8-5. The Notre Dame momentum was halted, however, when freshman Cory Coffman made the score 9-5 with his first career goal at 9:15 of the third quarter.
"We were embarrassed in our home opener last week," says Brundage. "Duke came in and took it to us. I'm very proud of the way we came together today."
The 'Hounds put together a three-goal run to end the third and start the fourth quarter with junior Chris Einhorn, Shek and Brundage all scoring goals. Freshman Joe Landry capped the win with an unassisted goal of his own at 2:24 of the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Dan Glazer got the start in goal for Loyola and ended the game with 12 saves.
"I was nervous at the beginning of the game because it was my first start as a goalie in college," says Glazer. "But the coaching staff does such an excellent job of preparing us each week and I could see all the Notre Dame tendencies, just like they told me. That really calmed me down."
Glazer earned the win while Brundage, Monfett and Spack all finished with four points on offense. Freshman Matt Cassalia, who was 8-of-11 at the faceoff circle, ended the game with a team-high six groundballs. "We really worked hard all week in practice and I'm very happy with our effort out on the field today," says Loyola Head Coach Bill Dirrigl. "I think this team has played well all year and it's very good to see the fruits of our labor in the form of a win."
The Greyhounds improve to 2-2 and now head to Providence, R.I. Loyola will play Brown next Saturday at 1 p.m. That game can be heard live on both WNST AM 1570 and online at www.LoyolaGreyhounds.com.
