Greyhounds Race Past Wagner
March 15, 2005
Baltimore, Md. - Senior Matt Monfett scored four goals and added an assist as the Greyhounds raced past Wagner at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Tuesday afternoon. Loyola built an early 5-1 lead and never looked back as it earned a 13-7 win to open its three-game homestand.
"I'm happy with the way our guys played today," says Loyola Head Coach Bill Dirrigl. "I'm happy with the win, but even more happy to get everyone some playing time and game experience."
The Greyhounds jumped on the Seahawks early and controlled the first quarter with 21 groundballs and 14 shots while winning 6-of-7 faceoffs. Freshman Shane Koppens got the offense rolling with a goal at 12:34 and an assist on Patrick Kennedy's goal at 11:20 to put Loyola up 2-0.
Kennedy would later find Monfett in an extra-man situation to give Loyola its third goal of the game and a 3-1 advantage. Koppens and senior John Halip also added first-quarter goals and the `Hounds led 5-1 after the first 15-minute stanza.
"Wagner played hard and never gave up," says Dirrigl. "I think they showed a lot of heart and you have to give them credit."
The Seahawks would rally with three second-quarter goals and all three came from their leading scorer Kevin Zulauf. Wagner, however, could not cut into the lead as Loyola answered every goal with a goal of its own. Two of those goals came from sophomore Greg Leonard, who started at first midfield instead of attack.
"The coaches moved Shane [Koppens] to attack and me back to midfield and it's made a huge difference," says Leonard. "I started the year at attack, but feel much more comfortable at midfield. I think I'm more productive as an offensive player when I'm not at attack."
The Loyola offense increased its lead to 12-5 with back-to-back-to-back goals from Dan Bauers, Monfett and Craig Georgalas and capped its 13-goal day with Jordan Rabidou's fourth goal of the season. The Greyhounds out-shot Wagner 46-21 and won 20-of-24 faceoffs.
Monfett's four goals and five points match a career-high while Koppens two-goal day extends his modest scoring streak to three straight games. Monfett, who entered the day with a team-high five goals, now has nine goals with all nine coming in Loyola's last three games.
"It was great to see the offense step it up today," says Monfett. "After a five-goal game at Duke, we needed to put some points on the board."
The Greyhounds also shared the ball with eight of their goals coming with assists. Bauers and Kennedy had two assists apiece to along with their second respective goals of the season.
Michael Fretwell had four saves in the win while Trae Rodgers registered his first save of the season, playing the final 6:29 in goal. Sophomore Jordan Rabidou continued to excel in the faceoff circle, winning 5-of-6 while Jeff Russell won 12-of-14 faceoffs to help the Greyhounds dominate the X. Russell also finished with six groundballs as did Kennedy, junior Steven Hess and freshman Paul Richards.
The Greyhounds improve to 1-3 overall and return to ECAC play this Saturday against St. John's. The Greyhounds host the Red Storm in a 1 p.m. contest.
