No. 14 Men's Lacrosse Tops Siena, 7-5, Tuesday
March 3, 2009
Loudonville, N.Y. - Six different players found the net for Loyola to bolster a balanced scoring attack and the No. 14/16 Greyhounds limited Siena to only one goal in a stretch of more than 27 minutes that spanned from the second to the fourth period to take a low-scoring, 7-5 non-conference win on Tuesday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
Junior attackman Cooper MacDonnell led the Greyhounds with a pair of goals--both coming in the third period--while also adding an assist. Attackman Collin Finnerty also registered a multi-point game for Loyola, which received its most evenly-distributed showing on offense all season.
It is the third straight victory for Loyola (3-1, 1-0 ECAC), which culminates a three-game roadtrip on Saturday against Duke at 2:30 p.m.
"This was a good road win in some tough conditions," said Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey. "We are looking forward to Saturday's matchup with Duke."
Just 2:30 into the game, Siena's Kenny Mazzone found the net to give the Saints an early 1-0 advantage. After nearly 12 minutes of scoreless action, sophomore attackman Matt Langan found the net from a feed from Finnerty, evening the squads at 1-1 to end the first.
Loyola and Siena (1-3) exchanged man-up goals to start the second period to again knot the teams, this time at 2-2. First, Loyola's Eric Lusby scored on a goal assisted by Chris Basler just 3:34 into the second period, but Siena's Chris Roth had the answer three minutes later.
The Greyhounds would swiftly respond with three straight unanswered goals, though. After some nice midfield movement, Mike Sawyer found an open Jimmy Daly, whose shot beat goalie Brent Herbst low from 12 yards out.
Junior midfielder Chris Hurst would then get in on the action with 7:09 left in the period, driving from the right-hand alley to beat Herbst high for his first goal of the season to give Loyola a 4-2 lead.
With his team playing with a man down, Finnerty found himself free off a pass from Shane Koppens, and unloaded a hard shot to the right side of the cage for his team-high ninth goal to put Loyola up by a three-goal cushion. Siena's Ryan Duggan would find the net with 1:43 left in the second to trim the Loyola lead to 5-3 at halftime.
A pair of MacDonnell tallies in the third period swelled the Loyola lead to four, 7-3. First, he beat his defender with a nice juke and scored an unassisted putaway with 7:18 to play. Less than three minutes later, he took a feed from Koppens--his second assist of the day--and beat Herbst with his effort, marking his second straight multi-goal game.
Siena's Chris D'Alberti and John Rogener both found the net in the fourth period for the final score.
Loyola's Steve Layne led on the defensive end with a career-high eight groundballs, while John Schiavione collected five. Schiavone went 9-of-16 at the face-off for Loyola.
Loyola outshot Siena 30-24 and won the groundball battle, 45-37.
