Bobby Benson is in his first season as assistant men's lacrosse coach at Loyola College. An All-America standout at Johns Hopkins and former offensive coordinator at UMBC, Benson joined Head Coach Charley Toomey's staff this January.
Benson will serve as Loyola's offensive coordinator and assist with recruiting and scouting. He will lead the man-up offense, where he saw tremendous success at UMBC.
In his two seasons with the Retrievers, Benson led the team to a goal scoring average of just under 10 goals per game. In his first season, UMBC scored 26 man-up goals, leading the nation for most of the season in that category. Last year, the Retrievers posted 28 man-up goals - the second best of any team in the country.
A 2003 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Benson had an outstanding career at attack. Leading the Blue Jays in scoring each of his four seasons, he became only the second player in school history to accomplish such a feat.
In his four years at Hopkins. Benson scored 124 career goals to place him sixth on the all-time scoring list. As a senior, he posted 41 goals with 12 assists and earned All-America honors. Benson was an Honorable Mention All-America his junior season and also garnered Verizon Academic All-America honors while earning his degree in Economics.
After college, Benson played professionally with the Boston Cannons and Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse. Drafted by Boston in 2003, Benson returned to Baltimore one year later. He scored nine goals for the Bayhawks in 2004, including a career-high four goals against New Jersey on June 5 of that season.
A native of Baltimore, Benson was first a standout for McDonogh High School, where he earned Baltimore Metro Player of the Year honors as a senior and led his team to the MIAA "A" Conference title. He is single and still resides in Baltimore.
