Welcome To Caves Valley Golf ClubThe Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Maryland has been created to provide members and their guests a world-class golfing experience with commensurate services and amenities for their enjoyment. Privately owned and managed, Caves Valley operates exclusively as a golf club.
Membership is limited by invitation to outstanding citizens across the nation whose contributions to the business and cultural communities are notable and who share a commitment to the finest traditions of golf and to the highest standards of sportsmanship and responsibility. One of the most prestigious golf clubs in the country, Caves Valley is located just 30 minutes north of Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
The Course Caves Valley Golf Club's course was designed by world-renowned architect Tom Fazio and opened for play in 1991. In just 14 years of existence, Caves Valley has already hosted the 2002 U.S. Senior Open Championship, the 1995 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, and the 1997 and 2004 A.J.G.A. Canon Cup Tournaments.
To meet the goals of quality, Tom Fazio believes, is to blend golf and environmental concerns. The development of the land should enhance nature's bounty.
Melding philosophy and practice at Caves Valley has created a course that is a masterpiece of design and environmental management. Where hundreds of acres have been set aside for preservation. Where the shape of a tree alone may, in turn, shape a green or a bunker. Where the natural contours of the land dictate the flow of golf holes. In sum, where expert design and engineering have taken the art and science of golf course design to new levels.
A par-70, 7,129-yard course, Caves Valley is a challenge of woods and wetlands, meadows and meandering hills.
Spacious open areas carved from the meadowlands characterize the front nine. Abundant water hazards figure into the first seven holes, while ample fairways ensure opportunity for individuality at each hole and privacy in play.
On the back nine, which crosses a stream valley and traverses a ridge, tree-lined fairways prevail, surrounded by lush foliage and an abundance of natural hazards. Here, tee shots fly through natural chutes of existing trees.
By incorporating natural challenges into all the holes, and by offering four tees, the Fazio design ensures balance for all. The course is a sturdy test for the best hitters, with fair play for members and guests with higher handicaps.
Tom Fazio has also used the variety of terrain to afford a variety of play. "The best part of golf, the fun part," he says - "there are no absolutes; therefore, there is no sameness."
Holes look like they've always been there. Natural landing areas, some forming ampitheaters in the contours of the land, take advantage of natural elevations. Approach shots to greens present varying vistas of tiers and bunkers, with glimpses of open space. Dramatic views emerge from woodlands; paths tuck into natural contours.
Long par 3's demand what Tom Fazio calls "hefty pokes." "Strong" is his word for the par 5's. The daunting eleventh, for example, drops 65 feet from the tee, then arcs right and sweeps upward to a magnificent tiered green.
Yet, as dramatic as one hole is, he explains, "the next follows suit. You'll find yourself saying time and again, `Look at this! Look at this.'"
