Flach and Oshrine Join Golfers As Class Of 2017
Nov. 27, 2012
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland head golf coach Chris Baloga announced that two of the top golfers in the state of Maryland – Connor Flach and Matt Oshrine – will join the Greyhounds’ program in the fall as the Class of 2017.
The duo finished tied for second at the 2012 Maryland State High School Golf Tournament in October at University of Maryland GC with a cumulative 36-hole score of 2 under par 140. They also and share a third-place ranking within the state of Maryland for their class on the AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings.
“I am very proud to have Connor and Matt as Greyhounds,” Baloga said. “Both young men are great players who are getting better each year and are extremely solid students having a 3.9+ unweighted high school GPA. They will be strong representatives for Loyola in their four years in the Patriot League.”
Flach, the Maryland Junior Amateur runner-up (lost via playoff), qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur in 2012, where he lost in a seven-for-one playoff for the final match-play spot. He was a four-time first-team All-Howard County performer while playing for Centennial High School in Ellicott City, Md. He finished tied for fourth at the Under Armour/Steve Marino AJGA Championship and was an HP Scholastic Junior Golf All-American Honorable Mention as a junior.
“Connor put together one of the best overall years of any junior golfer this summer in the region,” Baloga said. “He finished near the top of the leaderboard in just about every event he played in. His work ethic and determination in my opinion is what separates him and will make him an asset to our team in his tenure.”
Oshrine, from Pikesville High School, is ranked 102nd in his class by Junior Golf Scoreboard. He also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur this summer taking medalist honors at his sectional site. The Baltimore, Md., native competed in four AJGA events, including finishing tied for seventh at the Under Armour/Steve Marino Championship. Oshrine finished fourth at the Maryland State Junior and was first alternate at his sectional qualifier for the US Amateur. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment though, was his 10th-place finish in July at the Maryland State Open Championship.
“Matt is one of the most consistent junior golfers I watched all summer,” Baloga said. “In all of his AJGA events he participated, he always managed to finish inside the top 20. The bigger the event, the more his game stepped up as he nearly qualified for the US Amateur and had a top 10 at the Maryland Open. He is very confident attitude that will play a big part in our team’s success going forward.”
