Golfers Open Season At Doc Gimmler In New York This Weekend
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland golf team will begin its 2017-18 season on Saturday at the Doc Gimmler tournament at the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, New York.
The event will feature 36 holes of play on Saturday, followed by an 18-hole final round on Sunday.
“We are really looking forward to starting our season at Bethpage, as we had a lot of success the last time played here,” head coach Chris Baloga said. “The team qualifying for this tournament was as competitive as we have ever had, too. All of our players are capable of competing to win the event.
“I’m also looking forward to seeing what freshmen Brandon Berry and Evan Brown can do in their collegiate debut.”
In Loyola's last appearance at the event, the 2014 season opener, Matt Oshrine broke Loyola's 54-hole school record, shooting a 16-under 192, to win the event. All six golfers competing in the tournament finished under par, helping the Greyhounds to a runner-up finish with a 12-under 828.
Loyola’s lineup will consist of seniors Brendan Peel, Jeremy Wall and Ethan Wall, junior Erick Alonso, and freshman Brandon Berry. Freshman Evan Brown will also make his collegiate debut, playing as an individual.
This weekend’s 14-team tournament will feature UConn, Florida State, Hartford, Harvard, Hofstra, Iona, Johnson and Wales, Navy, Rhode Island, St. John’s, Towson, Villanova and Yale.
Loyola will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and will play with Hartford and Navy through the first two rounds.
Following the tournament, the Greyhounds will travel to Sugar Grove, Illinois, on Sunday, Sept. 24 to participate in the Northern Intercollegiate.
