Baloga Announces 2017-18 Golf Schedule
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland head golf coach Chris Baloga has released the program's 2017-18 schedule.
The Greyhounds will once again play host to a pair of tournaments to open the spring portion of the schedule, while they'll also have an opportunity to play some new and challenging courses throughout the year.
"We are excited about this year's schedule, as it's a good mix of tournaments and venues that we are familiar with, in addition to some new and exciting ones," Baloga said. "We will continue to face some of the top teams in college golf, while we'll also have an opportunity to play two very challenging golf courses ranked in the Top 100 of the country by Golf Digest -- Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois and the Pete Dye Golf Club in West Virginia."
Loyola will open the season at the Doc Gimmler Invitational, hosted by St. John's, September 9-10, marking the Greyhounds' first appearance at the event since finishing runner-up to Yale in the 2014 season opener.
"Bethpage Red Golf Course is a great place to open the season," Baloga said. "Over the years, our guys have proven that they can shoot some low numbers there, so we are exited to see what we can do this year."
The Greyhounds will then put themselves to the test, traveling to Aurora, Illinois, for the Northern Intercollegiate on September 24 and 25. The event will be hosted by Northern Illinois at Rich Harvest Farms, the site of the 2017 NCAA Championship Finals this past May.
October will start at a familiar course, as Loyola will play in NC State's Fall Invitational at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina, October 2-3, before heading to Morgantown, West Virginia for The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on October 9-10. The West Virginia tournament will be the first time Loyola has played at the Pete Dye Golf Club, a top-100 course in the country, while this will be the seventh-straight year the Greyhounds have played at NC State.
To close out the fall schedule, Loyola will head back to North Carolina for the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate at the Grandover Resort on October 28-29.
The spring will once again begin with the Loyola Intercollegiate at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona, on February 25-26, the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate in Florida on March 5-6, and William & Mary's Kingsmill Intercollegiate on March 25-27.
Loyola will close out its regular season with a pair of trips north to prepare or the 2018 Patriot League Championships at Lehigh. The Greyhounds will make their debut at the Springdale Golf Club on April 7-8, playing in the Princeton Invitational, followed by their first trip to Penn State since 2011, for the Rutherford Intercollegiate on April 14-15.
"We have scheduled these last two events to help us prepare for the Patriot League Championships," Baloga said. "Princeton's Springdale Golf Club has a great course that has several similarities to Lehigh's Saucon Valley Country Club, where the Patriot League Championships will be played the end of April."
The 2018 Patriot League Championships will take place April 28-29 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The winner of the tournament will claim the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Championships.
