Four With Loyola Ties Qualify For U.S. Amateur
July 30, 2014
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - Current Loyola University Maryland golfers Bart George and Keegan Boone , and a pair of Greyhounds alumni Matt Bassler '08 and T.J. Shuart `05, advanced from their respective sectional qualifiers and will compete next month at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
The 114th version of the Amateur Championship will be held Aug. 11-17 at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Boone, a rising junior, carded a two-round score of 139 at the Country Club of Woodmore in suburban Washington, D.C. earlier this month to finish second in the qualifier.
Meanwhile, George, a senior-to-be, shot 148 at Woodholme Country Club in the Baltimore area and advanced via a two-man playoff to reach the event. Both current Greyhounds will be playing in their first U.S. Amateurs.
Bassler, who attended Mount St. Joseph High School in Catonsville, Maryland, before competing at Loyola, tied for medalist honors at the Woodholme, one shot better than George. Shuart, a native of Coral Springs, Florida, took second and used a playoff win to advance with a two-round score of 142 at The Club at Emerald Hills in Hollywood, Florida.
Last year, Shuart completed a trifecta of qualifying for amateur championships at the national level, earning spots in the 2013 U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur (players 25 years of age or older) and the U.S. Public Links Championships.
Earlier this summer, Shuart won the Florida State Golf Association Amateur Public Links Championship, a tournament he also won in 2012; this competition will mark the fourth U.S. Amateur he has competed in.
Bassler, who is the program director at The First Tee of Baltimore, took third place at this year's Maryland State Golf Association Amateur, falling in match play semifinals to Loyola Golf Coach Chris Baloga. He will be playing in his second U.S. Amateur this year; previously, he played in the 2008 event. Bassler also made it to the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier this year.
George and Boone helped the Greyhounds advance to the NCAA Regionals for the seventh-straight this year by virtue of winning the Patriot League title. George finished tied for 11th at the Patriot League Championships. Boone tied for 12th in June at the Maryland Open.
In other Loyola golf alumni news this summer, Patrick McCormick rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to win the 93rd-Annual Maryland Open July 17.
