McCarthy And McCormick Honored As All-America Scholars
July 25, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. - Loyola University Maryland seniors Ryan McCarthy and Patrick McCormick have been named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, as announced Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
"It's a great accomplishment for Ryan and Patrick to be named an All-America Scholar,” head coach Chris Baloga said. “Both co-captains were very successful academically and on the course during their years on the team and it is a fitting ending to have them both receive this prestigious award. For Patrick to be named to the team in consecutive years is really something.
“I am really proud of these guys, along with Jay Mulieri, for elevating our golf program in the last four years."
McCarthy and McCormick, the first pair of Greyhounds to be honored in the same season, are among a total of 146 players in Division I to earn the honor, and two of only three to be included from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Troy Anderson, Fairfield). Of the 106 schools to be represented nationally, Loyola is one of just 30 programs to have more than one student-athlete earn All-America Scholar status this year.
McCarthy, a native of Silver Spring, Md., graduated as just the second Greyhound to win four MAAC titles (Alex Redfearn, ’11). He also competed in four NCAA Regionals, leading the team as both a freshman and senior. In his final outing in Athens, Ga., McCarthy carded a 13-over to finish 62nd overall.
At the 2012 MAAC Championships, he shot par or under through two rounds, finishing third on the team and tied for seventh at 3-over 219. He wrapped up the year shooting par or under through six rounds, was the team’s top finisher at the C&F Bank Collegiate (+10, 223) and the Maryland Intercollegiate (-4, 209), and had a stroke average of 75.22.
McCormick also helped Loyola claim three-straight MAACChampionships in his four years as a Greyhound. Hailing from Weston, Fla., he narrowly missed winning the individual conference title as a junior, finishing the tournament tied for first with a score of 217, before losing in a sudden-death playoff. At this year’s championship, he finished second on the team and tied for fourth overall with a 2-over 218.
Throughout the season, McCormick finished second on the team at three other tournaments - the Hartford Hawks Invitational (+7, 223), the Fireline Towson Invitational (+5, 221) and the Wolfpack Spring Open (+9, 153). He shot par or under through four rounds and had a 75.00 stroke average.
To be eligible to earn Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
