June 12, 2016

TOWSON, Md. - Connor Flach, a senior-to-be on the Loyola University Maryland golf team, defeated a former teammate and his current head coach to reach the championship match of the Maryland State Golf Association Amateur Championship where he was edged, 2-and-1 by Tyler Herriott on Sunday afternoon at Elkridge Country Club.

Herriott, who will be a senior at Ohio University, birdied the 35th hole of Sunday’s championship match to secure the win after taking a lead with a birdie on the 32nd hole.

Flach took a lead early in the match with a birdie on the first hold, but Herriott squared it with one on the second and went up one when Flach bogied the third. The Loyola senior-to-be, however, birdied the par-4 fifth to lead tie the match, and he took a lead on the next hole with a Herriott bogey.

The lead switched hands on the 10th hole following a pair of wins by Herriott, but he carded back-to-back bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes, swinging the lead back to Flach.

Flach, who was the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016, went 2-up on the 16th hole after a Herriott bogey, and the players traded bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes, sending Flach into the break between rounds up a pair.

Herriott quickly evened the match on the 21st hole after tying it one prior. That advantage was short-lived, however, as Flach squared the match on the fourth hole, and he had consecutive birdies to go 2-up after 26 holes.

After making the turn to the final nine holes down one, Herriott squared the match on the 28th frame following a Flach bogey. Flach, however, capitalized on a Herriott bogey to lead by a hole after the 30th.

Herriott, however, shot 2-under from that point forward to close out the victory.

Earlier in the competition, Flach scored a 1-up win over Will Koras in Round of 32 and a 19th-hole victory against Justin Feldman in the next round.

He then defeated Loyola head coach Chris Baloga, 3-and-2, in the quarterfinals, setting up a match against 2015 graduate Bart George in the semifinal. Flach pared the final two holes to hold off George and advance to the championship contest.

Bennett Wisner, who will be a junior at Loyola next year, also competed in match play after finishing 10th in stroke play competition. He won a first round match on the 19th hole against Brendan McKinney. Fellow junior-to-be Brendan Peel also competed in stroke play but missed the cut.

Two other alums, Matthew Bassler ’08 and Michael Mulieri ’09, also advanced to match play. Mulieri fell in the opening round, while Bassler advanced to the second.
