Setting A Champions Pace
Sept. 10, 2006
Annapolis, Md. - Sophomore Blake Furgerson shot a second straight round of 69 to lead the Loyola men's golf team to a team championship at the Navy Fall Invitational at Annapolis, Md. on Sunday afternoon. The team title comes in Loyola's first event of the season and is the program's first season-opening championship under sixth-year Head Coach Tom Beidleman.
"This is a great way to start the season," says Coach Beidleman. "The Navy Fall Invitational is a very solid tournament and I'm proud of the total team effort we put forth."
The Greyhounds entered the day one stroke back of leaders Winthrop, George Washington and North Dakota State and were one of seven teams within three strokes of the lead. With the tournament up for grabs, Loyola's lineup posted an impressive 286 to finish with a tournament score of 576, two stokes ahead of second place finishers Winthrop and Pennsylvania.
Furgerson, who shot a career-low round of 69 on Saturday, followed with another 69 on Sunday to tie for medalist honors, and force a two-way playoff. North Dakota State's Eric Johnson, who also shot a 36-hole score of 138, won the playoff and took home the top individual honor.
Senior captain Will Shriver posted a 73 to finish the tournament three stokes over par (145) while sophomore Michael Mulieri registered rounds of 73 to score a 146. Shriver placed 11th among all individuals while Mulieri finished tied for 19th.
The Greyhounds have now won fall tournaments in each of the last four seasons. Loyola will go for back-to-back wins when it returns to action next Monday-Tuesday, September 18-19 at the Towson Invitational.
