Mulieri Leads Loyola To Fifth-Straight MAAC Title
April 29, 2012
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Senior Jay Mulieri carded a 1-under 71 on the final round of the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Sunday at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course to win the individual title and lead the Loyola University Maryland golf team to its fifth-straight team title.
Mulieri, the 2009 MAAC Rookie of the Year, finished the tournament with a 4-under 212 to become the 10th Greyhound to win the McLeod Memorial Award. In addition, he joins his brother, Mike, the 2008 and 2009 MAAC Champion, in becoming the first pair of brothers to claim individual conference titles.
“The only reason I chose to play golf, and the main reason I decided to come to Loyola, was because of my brother,” Mulieri said. “He had such a successful career as a Greyhound that I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, he has two titles and I only have one, but he still continues to help me improve my game.”
As a team, the Greyhounds combined to break the MAAC Championship record by nine strokes, finishing the three-day tournament at 4-over 868. The win is the 14th title for Loyola in its 23 years in the conference. No other current league team has won more than four titles (Iona), while Army – which is no longer in the MAAC – won the first nine from 1982-1989.
“We played great all week,” head coach Chris Baloga said. “I’m really proud of how the guys prepared for and then performed in the championship.”
Senior Patrick McCormick was second for Loyola, finishing tied for fourth overall at 2-over 218. He completed the final round with a 1-over 73.
Sophomore Brendan Lemp wrapped up the tournament tied for 13th after shooting a 3-over 75 today for a 7-over 223, while freshman Bart George, the MAAC Rookie of the Year, finished tied for 16th overall. George shot a 4-over 76 through the final round, finishing with a 10-over 226.
With the team victory, Loyola secured a spot in an NCAA Regional for the fourth year in a row. The Greyhounds will learn their destination on Monday, May 7.
