Golf Rallies From 10 Strokes Down To Win 6th-Straight MAAC Title
April 28, 2013
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Loyola University Maryland's men's golf team entered the final round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 10 strokes back of co-leaders Iona College and Fairfield University, but the Greyhounds shot a tournament-best 5-under 283 to win its sixth-straight title by one shot on Sunday.
With the victory, the Greyhounds will also advance to the NCAA Regional Championships for the sixth time in as many years.
Loyola shot 295 on the first day and 301 on the second to sit an even 10 shots back of the leaders going into the final 18 holes. A great start to the day - the Greyhounds top four players shot 8-under on the course's front nine - put Loyola in position to win down the stretch.
After nine holes on Sunday, Loyola had taken a five-stroke lead over Iona while trailing Fairfield by three.
The Stags, however, faltered on the back nine, shooting nine-over. Iona, meanwhile, improved over its front-nine, shooting six-under on the back.
The Greyhounds finished with a three-round total of 881, edging Iona by one stroke. Fairfield finished three shots back at 884. Canisius College was fourth at 916, and Manhattan College took fifth, 927. Saint Peter's University (928), Rider University (952), Siena College (973) and Niagara University (985) rounded out the nine-team field.
Dengler was Loyola's top individual finisher, placing fourth overall at 1-over 217. He was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year, as well.
Jon Ross carded a final round 1-under 71 and took sixth, his best-ever finish at the MAAC Championships, with a 3-over 219. Brian McCormick tied for seventh overall at 4-over 230, and George tied for 16th at 14-over 230. Will Handley was tied for 19th at 18-over 234.
When Dengler finished his round with a bogey on the 18th hole, the Greyhounds were tied with Iona, but a birdie by George on the 17th proved to be the winning shot.
George had five birdies and one bogey in the final round, as did Dengler. Ross also had five birdies on Sunday.
