April 27, 2014
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland men’s golf team continued its string of conference championships Sunday afternoon, winning its seventh-straight title - and first-ever in the Patriot League - at Army’s West Point Golf Course.
Holding a five-stroke advantage heading into the final round, the Greyhounds extended their lead to 10 strokes to finish at 21-over 291 and capture the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Head coach Chris Baloga was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year following the championships, while senior Brendan Lemp, sophomore Jimmy Dengler and freshman Matt Oshrine all finished in the top-five to earn All-Patriot League First Team honors.
Oshrine put in a strong finish to the two-day tournament, tying today’s low-round score of 1-under 69 to move from eighth place and into a tie for third with Dengler at 5-over 215. Dengler shot a 6-over 76 today.
Lemp was one stroke behind his teammates, finishing with a 4-over 74 today for a three-round score of 6-over 216.
Junior Bart George and freshman Connor Flach checked in just outside of the top-10, finishing tied for 11th at 12-over 222. Flach carded a 3-over 73 through today’s round, while George shot a 5-over 75.
Senior Andrew McGill also competed today, finishing with an 11-over 81 and tied for 32nd with a 25-over 235 throughout tournament play.
Army finished runner-up to the Greyhounds with a 31-over 871, while Lehigh grabbed third with a 56-over 896. Navy checked in fourth at 60-over 900 and Bucknell was two strokes back with a 62-over 902. Colgate (66-over 906), Lafayette (86-over 926) and Holy Cross (92-over 932) rounded out the sixth through eighth-place finishers, respectively.
Army’s Peter Kim claimed Most Outstanding Golfer and Most Outstanding Rookie honors for winning the individual title and being the only golfer to shoot under par through the tournament, finishing at 1-under 209. Navy’s August Jonas was runner-up at 4-over 214, while Oshrine, Dengler and Lemp rounded out the top five.
The Greyhounds, one of 81 teams to advance to NCAA Championships, will find out which regional they will compete in on Monday, May 5. The selection show will air on the Golf Channel at 10 a.m.
