Oshrine, Wall Lead Golf To Eighth-Straight Conference Title
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Matt Oshrine earned medalist honors with a 1-under par three-round score of 215, and Jeremy Wall finished second one shot back, as the Loyola University Maryland men's golf team won its eighth-straight conference title Sunday afternoon at Seven Oaks Golf Club.
The Greyhounds captured the Patriot League title for the second year in a row, finishing the weekend at 2-under 862 to edge the U.S. Military Academy by six strokes.
Oshrine became the first Loyola player to win the Patriot League title - Loyola joined the League in July 2013 after winning six-consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles - and the first to take top honors at a conference tournament since Jay Mulieri won the MAAC crown in 2012.
The win delivered Loyola's eighth-straight bid to the NCAA Tournament, as well. The Greyhounds will find out their NCAA destination on Monday, May 4, when selections are announced on The Golf Channel.
With the individual win, Oshrine was named the Patriot League's Most Outstanding Player, and Wall earned Rookie of the Year laurels. Wall is the Greyhounds' first conference Rookie of the Year since Jimmy Dengler earned the 2013 award in the MAAC.
Loyola Head Coach Chris Baloga was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second-straight year, as well.
Loyola and Army West Point far outdistanced the other Patriot League schools in the tournament. Host Colgate University and Lafayette College tied for third at 896 (+32) and were followed by Lehigh University at 909 (+45). The U.S. Naval Academy (913, +49), Bucknell University (929, +65) and College of the Holy Cross (965, +101) rounded out the field.
The Greyhounds entered the day with a nine-stroke lead over the Black Knights, but their lead tightened to as few as two on Sunday's back nine.
Oshrine came into the day in second overall at 2-under, but he bogeyed his first hole Sunday. He played the rest of the front-nine at even par, and he birdied the par-5 12th hole to tie for the individual lead.
He then bogeyed the 15th, but pulled back to even for the day with a birdie at 17 before bogeying the final hole of the tournament.
Wall was fifth overall after the first two days after shooting a 6-under 66 in Saturday's second round. He had seven pars on the front nine and a birdie on the fourth hole. A bogey on the ninth put him at even for the day at the turn, and another bogey at the 11th dropped him to 1-over.
The freshman, however, strung together six-consecutive pars on the back nine before birdying the 17th.
Connor Flach was the Greyhounds' No. 3 overall finisher, placing seventh with a 4-over 220 for the three-round tournament. Bart George finished tied for eighth at 5-over 221, and Dengler was tied for 12th at 8-over 224. Bennett Wisner was 17th overall at 10-over 226.
Oshrine and Wall both earned All-Patriot League First Team honors, while George and Flach were named to the second team.
The victory was Oshrine's third overall this season. He won the Doc Gimmler on Long Island in November and the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate in Kingsmill, Virginia, last month.
