McCormick Leads Greyhounds After Day One Of Championships

After the first round, Brian McCormick ties for third.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - In the first day of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship action, the Loyola University Maryland men’s golf team sits in third with a combined score of 9-over-par 297, at Disney’s Palm Golf Course. 

Sophomore Brian McCormick led the Greyhounds at 2-under-par-70, after back-to-back birdies helped the sophomore to a front nine score of 2-under-par 36.  At the turn, McCormick bogeyed No. 11, but got back to even on the back nine, after a birdie on No. 13.  McCormick came into the clubhouse tied for third with Iona College’s Andrew Graham.

Jon Ross joined McCormick in the top ten, turning in a first-round scorecard of two-over-par-74. In his first conference championship appearance, freshman Jimmy Dengler tied for 13th with a score of 4-over-par-76.  Will Handley trailed Dengler by one stroke, going into the second round tied for 17th among three other competitors. Sophomore Bart George tied for 31st, with a score of 10-over-par-82.

After day one, Iona College led in the clubhouse at 1-under-par 287, while Fairfield University held a four-stroke lead over the Greyhounds.  

Iona’s Dylan Newman led in the clubhouse, with a first round total of 4-under-par-68.

The Greyhounds will return to the Palm Course tomorrow, to continue day two of the 54-hole competition. Tee times are set to begin at 7:30 a.m., starting off the No. 10 tee.
