Golfers Finish Second At Whiting-Turner Towson Invitational

GRASONVILLE, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland golf team finished runner-up in a tight team battle at the Whiting-Turner Towson Invitational at the Prospect Bay Country Club on Tuesday. The Greyhounds edged Rutgers by one stroke through the final round to finish second of the 24 teams with a score of 49-over 913, while the Scarlet Knights finished third at 50-over 914.
William & Mary won the team title with a 24-over 888 and Indiana University of Pennsylvania was fourth at 54-over 918.
Bart George finished tied for sixth overall with a 9-over 224. George was third heading into the final round, but carded an 8-over 80 today to finish with round scores of 74, 71 and 80, respectively.
Junior Jon Ross improved 14 places today after shooting a 3-over 75 for a three-round total of 12-over 228, placing him tied for 13th. Senior Will Handley was third for Loyola with a 14-over 230, tying him for 18th place.
Freshman Jimmy Dengler matched his first-round score of 6-over 78 to finish tied for 24th at 16-over 232 and classmate Keegan Boone was tied for 58th among the 123 competitors, carding a 23-over 239 through the three rounds.
William & Mary’s Jeremy Wells won the individual title with an even 216, while Zack Kempa of Indiana (Pa.) was second at 3-over 219 and the Tribe’s Charlie Kern was third at 7-over 223.
Loyola will head to Raleigh N.C., on Saturday, April 20 for the two-day Wolfpack Spring Open. The invitational will be the Greyhounds’ final tune-up before the 2013 MAAC Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
