HOLLYWOOD, S.C. - Freshman Jimmy Dengler led all competitors through the third and final round of the Charleston Shootout at the Links at Stono Ferry on Tuesday to lead the Loyola University Maryland golf team to a ninth-place finish.

Dengler and sophomore Brian McCormick led the team with a three-round score of 227. Dengler shot a 79 through the first two rounds before shaving 10 strokes off his score to finish today with a 3-under 69, the best score of the day. Dengler was one of just seven competitors, out of a field of 84, to score in the 60s through one of the three rounds.

McCormick opened the three-round tournament with an even 72, before carding a 75 and 80 through the second and third rounds, respectively.

Sophomore Bart George shot his tournament-best round today, finishing at 4-over 76, after shooting a 77 and 78 through the first two rounds, respectively. He finished tied for 44th with a score of 231.

Junior Jon Ross was two strokes behind George, finishing tied for 53rd at 233. He carded a 75, 80 and 78, respectively, while freshman Fletcher Sokul was the final Greyhound competing. Sokul finished tied for 64th at 240 (79-80-81).

USC Upstate won the team title with an aggregate score of 881, while Sam Houston State was second at 886 and Bethune-Cookman College was third with a score of 890.

Individually, John Duke Hudson (College of Charleston), Easton Renwick (Coastal Carolina) and Hayden Garrett (Clemson) finished in a three-way tie for first place, all shooting an even 216.

In addition to Dengler, USC Upstate's Logan Boatner (68, second round) and Ryan Cornfield (68, second round) Clemson's Garrett (67, second round) and Blake Kennedy (69, first round), Charleston's Hudson (68, second round) and Coastal Carolina's Renwick (68, first round) all scored in the 60s through one round of the tournamnet.

Loyola will return to action Sunday, March 24 when it heads to Kingsmill, Va., for the three-day C&F Bank Intercollegiate.
