BALTIMORE, MD - Senior co-captain Lindbergh Chatman is set to lead the Greyhounds into the 2003-04 men's basketball season. Chatman, along with Loyola's three juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen tip off the regular season this Friday night at the Battle of Baltimore in Towson, Md.

The Greyhounds begin the year in the opening game of the 2003 Battle of Baltimore Basketball Classic. Loyola will play UMBC at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on WMAR-TV 2. Towson and Coppin State play in the nightcap and all four teams return to Towson for Saturday's consolation and championship games.

Loyola's match-up with UMBC is a repeat of last year's Battle of Baltimore Championship Game. The Retrievers won that game, but only two weeks later, Loyola defeated UMBC by a 62-43 score at Reitz Arena. Bobby Bossman scored a game-high 18 points that night, knocking down four three-point shots.

The Greyhounds lead the all-time series 26-16 and have played UMBC in all six Battle of Baltimore Classics. Chatman, the team's lone senior, scored a career high 12 points against UMBC in the 2001 Battle of Baltimore. He, along with junior Jim Chivers, will captain Loyola this season.

Chivers, Loyola's first player from the state of Minnesota, played in all 28 games last season and really came on strong at season's end. Loyola's top returning scorer is junior Bernard Allen, who averaged 8.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season. Allen had 11 rebounds in each of Loyola's two contests versus UMBC in 2002-03.

Allen will get help on the boards with the return of junior Irakli Nijaradze, who missed 10 games last season with a stress fracture, and redshirt sophomore Sean Corrigan, who sat the season out with an injury. Corrigan stands at 6-11 while Nijaradze measures in at 6-10.

Sophomore guards Charlie Bell and Linton Hinds get help with three freshmen guards on the roster. Kenny Burr out of Lexington, S.C., Jamaal Dixon out of Braintree, Mass. and Shane James out of Toronto, Ont. shore up the guard position for Head Coach Scott Hicks, while sophomore forward Josko Alujevic, one of four international players on the team, gets added support with the addition of freshman Michael Tuck, who is also an international product and hails from Toronto, Ont.

Loyola and UMBC are scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. Tickets are now on sale and priced at $10 for adults and $5 for children under 17. Students at the four participating schools and Morgan State will get in free with a valid ID. Call 410-704-2244 for your tickets.
