Friday's Exhibition Kicks Off Men's Basketball Season
Nov. 4, 2009
Baltimore, Md. - The 2009-2010 Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds will be on display for the first time Friday night when they host Adelphi in an exhibition contest in Reitz Arena at 7 o'clock. This will be the final tune up before the regular season gets underway one week following when Loyola welcomes Vermont to the home floor to tip off the official start of the season.
There is a fresh mix of familiar and new faces to this year's team with as many as nine players scheduled to see significant action based on preseason practices.
Back for his final season is senior guard Brett Harvey. The leading free throw shooter in the entire NCAA last year, the 6-1 sharpshooter will be looking to defend that crown as well as achieve some team and individual milestones. With 49 victories through his first three seasons, his class is already the sixth most successful class in the program's 28-year Division I history with a full season to play. And with 896 career points, he is 104 points away from becoming the 30th member of the 1,000 point club at Loyola.
Loyola's junior class is perhaps its most decorated among the current roster. Guard Jamal Barney was the leading scorer in the MAAC last year, earned All-MAAC Second Team accolades and was named the Preseason All-MAAC Second Team by the league's coaches. Guard Brian Rudolph was the Rookie of the Year following his freshman year and was perhaps the Greyhounds' best player at the close of last year, establishing career highs in scoring (19 points) and assists (12) in the final two games of the regular season.
The sophomore class boosted its profile with the eligibility of forward Shane Walker, a transfer from Maryland who sat out last season to establish his residency. He is expected to make an immediate impact and will be joined by MAAC All-Rookie selection Anthony Winbush and guard J'hared Hall. Forward Paolo Ivis did not see game action a year ago and it is expected that classmate Josh Wiegand will do the same this season.
Joining Walker as newcomers are freshmen Robert Olson and Julius Brooks. Olson, an early November signee from Georgetown Prep, is expected to provide backup at all three guard positions while Brooks may compete for a starting spot at forward after joining the Greyhounds in May out of Greensboro, N.C. The final roster addition is forward Erik Etherly, a forward who transferred into the program after spending one year at Northeastern University.
Friday is the first of only four chances to see the Greyhounds in Reitz Arena in 2009 with two of those coming in the span of eight days. After the home and season opener on November 13 against the Catamounts, Loyola will host Morgan State on the first day of December and Howard on December 19.
