Vote Today For Loyola's Greatest Men's Basketball Players
Oct. 20, 2008
Baltimore, Md. - Loyola College will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Greyhounds basketball this season with a variety of activities to commemorate the tradition. Beginning today, Greyhounds basketball fans have the opportunity to be a part of the celebration by voting for Loyola Basketball's All-Century team.
In 1908, a team of Loyola students beat Baltimore Medical 32-18 for the College's first victory and hence beginning a hundred-year long tradition. Since then many great players and coaches have graced the hardwood for the Loyola men's basketball program from Lefty Reitz to Jim Lacy and Kevin Green to Gerald Brown. The ballot for the All-Century team includes these players and more to represent the best in Loyola men's basketball history.
The All-Century team will be made up of 20 players from four eras: The Early Era (1908 to 1936), The Reitz Era (1937 to 1961), The Classic Era (1962 to 1981) and The Modern Era (1982 to 2008).
The season-long festivities will begin on opening weekend of November 14-16. On Friday, November 14, the Greyhounds will face Mount St. Mary's in what will be the 164th game in the most-played rivalry in the state of Maryland. The season opener will include a number of commemorative activities including a ceremonial toss with two legends of the Mount St. Mary's vs. Loyola rivalry.
On Saturday, November 15, a special reception will be held for all basketball alumni in McGuire Hall.
The celebration weekend concludes on Sunday, November 16, when the Greyhounds face Tennessee State at 1 o'clock in Reitz Arena. During the game, the All-Century Team will be announced.
Voting will close on November 7, so vote today on www.loyolagreyhounds.com for your favorite players.
