Loyola Men's Basketball Releases 2017-18 Non-Conference Slate
July 14, 2017
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland men's basketball will open its 108th season on November 10 to kick off an 11-game non-conference schedule that will take it to seven different states.
Four of the games will be played on Reitz Arena, the Greyhounds' home floor, and their final non-conference contest will pit Head Coach G.G. Smith against his father Tubby's Memphis Tigers.
Loyola's Smith will face his mentor for the second time as a head coach on Saturday, December 23 at the FedEx Fourm. The two first met in November 2014 during the younger's second season on the Evergreen campus when the elder Smith was in charge at Texas Tech.
"We are looking forward to another tough non-conference schedule that will get us ready for Patriot League play," G.G. Smith said. "It will be another special day for my family when we are able to play Memphis, something I am certainly looking forward to."
The Greyhounds open their regular-season on Friday, November 10 with a game at Northwestern, a team that reached the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Four days later, Loyola will take on former Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Fairfield in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Stags, who played in the 2017 College Insider Tournament's First Round a year ago, will host the Greyhounds on Tuesday, November 14.
Loyola, which reached the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational Postseason Tournament in 2016-17, plays its first home regular-season game on Friday, November 17 when nearby Towson comes to Reitz Arena. That game will be followed by another home game on Tuesday, November 21 against Goucher College.
Four-consecutive games away from Reitz are up next, starting with a two-game swing to New England. The Greyhounds will take on UMass-Lowell on Sunday, November 26 before starting a series against Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, November 28.
Loyola returns to its home state on Saturday, December 2 for the 173rd meeting between the Greyhounds and Mount St. Mary's. The Mountaineers will host this season's edition of the state's most-played rivalry in Emmitsburg as part of a doubleheader with the schools' women's teams.
The Greyhounds will play at the Atlantic Coast Conference's Florida State on Wednesday, December 6 before to close the four games away from home. The Seminoles reached the NCAA Second Round in 2017.
Loyola hosts Binghamton on Saturday, December 9 in a doubleheader when the Greyhounds women precede against Towson. That game will be the last before Loyola breaks for fall-semester final exams, and the Greyhounds host their last home non-conference game of the year on Thursday, December 21 against Drexel.
The date with Memphis on December 23 will lead into the Christmas holiday, and the Greyhounds embark on an 18-game Patriot League schedule shortly thereafter.
That slate of games will be announced on a later date. All schedule information is subject to change, and fans should visit LoyolaGreyhounds.com for the most-recent information.
